if we get moving fortress parts, i would make apeture science with goblings at the test subjects. i could use an orrey style area for the generator

Consigning immortal beings to endless torment by having them run around in underground stone circles indefinitely. Hm.

You do realize you've independently come up with Dante's Inferno, right?

Very dwarfy.

In order to make the space requirements a bit less demanding, it might be a good idea to use a "gear-like" system, where you have a small ring that moves a large ring slightly with each revolution, that moves an even larger ring slightly with each revolution.

How to do this, I am not sure. Linking pressure plates might work. But I'm thinking about it, as I'd quite like a simple clock to keep track of the months (I don't understand the dwarf calendar at all).

In that *insert expletive here" Give the person above you a Fortress Goal thread, I am now assigned to build an orrery.

I'm doomed.

Cake. Water repeaters for action, pumps to move water for each month, and flood gates to control the motion.

Code: [Select]
FX>>FFX>>FFX>>
F=Floor
X=Flood Gate
>>= Pump indicating flow direction.

Gotta be built across two levels to allow the pumps to pump, but the month it's providing mist for is the current one.

Will need a couple of repeaters to ensure that it shifts to the new month properly, while also closing off the old month. If evaporation is a problem, add water to the final month of the year. Power should be selective so that only the new month and old month are getting power.

If FPS is a problem, use a celebration system, to only pump water at the start of the month, and a Mini-water reactor to engage and disengage the primary reactor. Thus rather than having a continuous water reactor running you can simply have a small one going to engage the primary reactor to keep the FPS down.

thats exactly the article i was looking for earlier.  odd that years in df are shorter than real years.  either the planet orbits faster or spins slower.  perhaps you cant assume that the four inner planets have orbital periods resembling those in our world.

Dwarf years being shorter shouldn't really be a surprise.

If you think about it, goblins, by virtue of not needing to eat, being immortal, and never aging yet continuing to live, are basically animated perpetual motion machines. So why not exploit their unlimited energy?

Do elves not also share the same traits? Wouldn't also it be more fun to enslave tree loving hippies to power machines built entirely from their beloved forests, never again to set foot in their forests and run freely? Goblins strike me as being from an antlike hive structure in which this would not be punishment so much as gainful employment.

Well,first off, nice ideas guys, while I don't think I'll be using goblins(invasions are off), it still puts a smile on my face thinking about it. Now, as for what planets are going to be used, it will be a model of our solar system, and to get the days right I'm going to scale down to the DF calendar, meaning one full year is only 336 days or only 92% of a RL year. Appyling that to the other planets, and then scaling down, to something like 3 DF days to one orrery tick, so then instead of a 336 step orbit path it's only 112, still way too damn big. Anyway, I was wondering about something, for example; If the Earth orbit is 20, and the Mars orbit were 30, and I were to make the Earth orbit tick every 2 days and the Mars every 3, would they still come into alignment during the same time period? I don't know if that came out very clear or not, but if not I'll explain it better.

They won't if your scaling down method requires rounding or truncation.

Very dwarfy.

You just gave me an idea for a hellish Sisyphean sort of trap:

A long corridor which a goblin is dumped into.  It has two pressure plates in the corridor and a drain on the end which the goblin is dumped into, and there's a way up and out at the other end.  One pressure plate near the exit is goblin triggerable and opens a floodgate which holds back a pressurized cistern.  When the goblin walks over it, it opens the cistern, pushing him back to the far end of the corridor where a water activated pressure plate closes the floodgate, and the water drains out of the drain.  Goblin spends eternity walking to the exit and getting washed back to where he started.

The Enrichment centre sounds really cool.
If only we had piston-panels

Bonus points if you manage to get a modular transport system that can redirect them anywhere between chambers that vary between stupid (eg. path in a pleasing pattern), dangerous (path through a minefield), unsolvable (said endless walk), lethal (assorted deathtraps af varrying quickness and efficiency, and a recapture mechanism for those re-assigned before dying), or used for actual !!SCIENCE!!.

Then make a system that uses thier own comrades wandering and "Testing" to randomly redirect them between test chambers, with an override for shipping one gobbo automaticaly to a given room for actual experiments. Maybe have Vital Apparatus Vents (waterfalls through grates that dump in objects for the gobbos to use) and the occasional "disrobing asscosiate request annex" where the poor gobbos are re-caged for storage and/or stripping.

Do invaders equip stuff?

Why stop there, make an entire castle floor or section into a small pocket dimension of hell, and create all kinds of traps just like this one where the goblin or whatever other prisoner is tormented forever.
