What is the best way to go about safe fishing when the local river is full of carp and aligators?

...do dwarves like chipping their own carp out from obsididan lumps?

I figured the guy was a goner too when a noseless bat from hell flew right over the fortifications and attacked.

Have you considered keeping livestock instead?

I'm confused.

Is anything in DF ever safe? Really?

IIRC they can fish fine through grates. While creatures cannot attack dwarves through a grate, they can scare the dwarf through the grate.

Grates do not block vision. A scared dwarf will just keep interrupting his fishing job, but the grate will keep him absolutely safe from the creature and from drowning.

Err...

So we shouldn't put a grate?

If you want to keep out megabeasts from eating your fisherdwarves or destroying your pump stack you should build a grate.

Set your military to always wear their uniforms and turn on fishing for the otherwise useless ones.  My military are all fishers/hunters/woodcutters, allowing the soft meaty dwarves to stay inside.

Make a safe pond somewhere in the same biome (and on the same level) as the river and fish out of that.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Your Biome does have winter, right? So when the river freezes, dig in, establish grates, then when water comes flowing back, the carp will live in happyville while the dorfs fish in the grate established territories.
