a theoretical, and impossible, idea

Okay, assuming that time travel in reverse is possible, and that time travel works under the "plastic time" theory, consider this scenario:

A man, who is a big fan of the band, X, uses a time machine to go back to within a year before X formed. He then records all of their biggest hits, publishes them, as X's work, copyright X, etc., and returns to his own time. What do you think has changed?

Theoretically, time would alter itself crazily until it reaches a stable loop - likely the time-traveler making a mistake and getting crushed by a bus before he has a chance to mess something up.

Or... nothing would change. Since in going back in time and editing the songs and then returning, he created a stable time loop and loved the songs despite not knowing that his future self went into the past and created them.

You went back to an alternative parallel universe.  As such you've simply introduced music from another parallel universe there.

It depends on some variables. Such as how far he has to go back, ect. Since he just popped out of no where basically, and then disappeared, that would mean he would have loved songs from a basically unknown artist.

If it was not a unknown artist he went back in time too, it would screw up the time line, and more likely then not he would not have fallen in love with the songs and would not have gone back most like. So reality would mostly flicker like TherosPherae said until it became stable.

Now, if it was already a unknown artist he fell in love with, then nothing would change.
If it was not a unknown artist, but he still fell in love with it when it became a unknown artist though some other way, it would change the songs to be written by a unknown artist, but unless you are looking at it from about a sixth dimensional prospective, you would not see the change.

Obviauly it turns out a stable time loop, maybe the band couldn't actually do music and just managed to get credit for the songs from the future. I don't see why people have a problem with these things.

While they are very convenient for writing stories, "stable timeloops" don't really resolve anything if you think you're actually going back to the same world.  After all, now noone has ever made that music, and that's still a weird paradox.

I say that if you went back in time, you'd be the same person you were a year ago and had no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine for which you would go back and time and be the same person you were a year ago and have no reason to do anything differently until you gained access to a time machine

Parallel universes don't resolve anything either. I'd say they are even more of an asspull than stable time loops.

The band takes advantage of the pre-recorded songs and lives the high life off the sudden influx of royalties. The songs are just as popular, since the culture when they were released is about the same, and the band tries to continue the diskography. Unfortunately for the time traveler, they never had a chance to develop their own voice- they simply imitate themselves.

The new songs are terrible and pollute the name of the band so much that someone decides they must go back in time and prevent the band from receiving the songs in the first place...

Looking at a few musicians, that may have actually happened. More than once.

I dunno about "asspull", but it does resolve the paradoxes that arise if you return to the same world (for instance, it doesn't matter if you interact with your past self).

It resolves little because it boils down to changing the question itself. It still does not address what happens if you travel to the past of your own universe.

The traveller going back in time destroys Wyld stallions, wrecks their music career and ends up creating a post apocalyptic future in which Rufus is never born causing Bill and ted to fail history. That's what band we're talking about right?
