Buggy Statue
« on: December 29, 2006, 04:06:00 am »

The attached save is centered on a carpender who installed the statue he's standing on.  And can't get off.  It is only that statue, as far as I can tell (others have had no problems, as evident by the 6 or 8 others visible), and it doesn't matter who places it or where: they can't get off.

I have seen that behavoir myself. I finally got it to work but I had to replace a statue abotu 20 times before it got right. (I was trying to see if the TILE was bugged (or co-ordinates or something) or if it was something else. Really, about 20 tries =/

Edit: different statues all did the same thing. Only the tile was the constant. There were several locations on the map this was happening, did not happen in older versions, that I had ever *NOTICED*.

I have dwarves sitting on statues too, but as far as i can tell, it is just because they have nothing else to do, and are waiting for an order. If the order is to do something they cant reach, like cut a tree down on the inside of the river, or collect a plant under a workshop, then they spam messages, otherwise they just go and do it, often walking over multiple statues to get there.

Had that happen with this statue, except that it didn't matter where his job was when it finally showed up.  He couldn't get there.

And I've moved this statue around a number of times, any other statue in the same place causes no problems.

I've had it happen now a dozen times in my present game, with statues, windows, and with the part of magma smelters and forges that hang over the magma. Its very annoying. They will stay there forever unless something is done.

But I did find a workaround that beats taking out whatever they are stuck on. I draft them into the military, then order them to be stationed some distance away. After a few seconds, they will move towards that spot. And once off the spot they were stuck on, you can undraft them back to whatever they were, and they will go on as if nothing happened. (Tho they still dont like being drafted and undrafted.)

One time I had a legendary miner get stuck on top of an obsidian rock.  He was there for the longest time, in the state of mining, but not moving or clearing out any stone.  I have no idea how he got stuck like that.  Eventually he got thirsty and moved off to get a drink...

Most of the time.  I've given up uninstalling the statues until they start spamming me with "can't find path" which means they are really and truely stuck.

I've given up placing statues, 90% of the time the dwarf placing it gets stuck. Haven't had it happen with a well yet.

I tried this with my metalsmith on a magma smelter, but she was thirsty, so not being able to find a way to water took precedence.

He managed to get off the well himself sometime later, so I'm not sure if he was pera-stuck, though I am sure I got some "cancle, couldn't find path" messages from him.

I've got a save with a swordsdwarf stuck on a magma smelter if Toady wants it. I've tried un-drafting and drafting and stationing and nothing seems to work. It's over the magma flow, so I can't destroy that.

I checked the smelter to make sure that it wasn't stacks of stuff possibly causing the problem, there was nothing currently being stored in it though.

I think the new stay-inside stuff might be causing some issues with this, since they check more thoroughly if their destinations are connected to where they are standing (which is essentially in a wall).

Anyway to make the stay inside make them "stay away from the bloody front door, pleasesthanksbye"?
They'll take a job with a Forbidden destination, and do it right up to the doors, then cancel the job "Forbidden Area."
Send stuff to the trade depo and set dwarves stay in.  They'll haul it all the way to the doors.

I think most of the jobs check the destination before the dwarf starts moving.  The trade depot job might be an unfortunate exception.
