Disturbing Diplomacy: a new chapter in dwarven history?
« on: April 27, 2011, 01:56:04 pm »

So I have been running a fort for a while. I've been turning away the odd goblin siege regularly, usually without any shots fired. (in fact, with NO shots fired). I usually dispose of the cage trapped goblins via dumping them (and their cages) into a magma pit. It seems more humane than butchering them with my soldiers.

But something VERY disturbing just happened. A demon appeared on my map, promptly entered my fortress through the well, and then... complimented me on the furnishings, and then left. At first, my instinct was to say "KILL IT NOW!", but it had the word "diplomat" appended to it's name.

Does this mean I'll be getting goblin caravans now? The goblins that appeared about the same time SLAUGHTERED another caravan, but have otherwise not attacked. Also, does this mean that the humans they slaughtered will now be at war with me? All sorts of questions fill my head at this point...

Edit: never mind. the demon was a HUMAN diplomat. WHAT. THE. FUCK?!? I am thinking I'm going to have to slaughter all humans at this point.

Occasionaly demons pose as human gods and take leadership positions, hence the demon diplomat.

It takes more than one botched trade to get the humans to attack you. If it keeps happening, though, they'll get upset and attack.

No gobbo caravans, though that would be pretty funny...

Demons seem to play for whatever side they like. Sometimes enemy, sometimes ally.

I assume this happened immediately after your fortress became a Barony, since that's the trigger for attracting Diplomats from other civilizations.

Do note, however, that you will never see that demon again - due to a bug, all position-holders lose their position upon leaving your fortress, which means next year's Human diplomat will just be an ordinary Human.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

This same thing happened to me too.  Of course, I acted on my first instinct and tried to kill it with my military.  But it breathed poisonous gas and wiped me out, then didn't touch a single civilian, complemented my fortress and left.  I didn't stand a chance when the goblin siege showed up minutes later  :'(  You will be missed, Helmsrift.

And not long after the demon left, a forgotten beast wandered into the caverns, with the "fun" trait of being able to cause instant necrosis with it's vaporous breath. I sent a suicide squad after it, which turned out to be the wrong thing to do; the forgotten beast died, and then my entire fortress devolved into a tantrum spiral from the loss of said suicide squad. That'll teach me for enacting "positive population control measures" right before sending suicide squads into battle (well, I suppose the suicide squad also counted as "positive population control measures" too, not just the infant grinder*). The only positive thing about it was that my game crashed in the midst of the riot, and I got to start off from where I was at this morning.

This time I'm making forgotten beast zoo. And GOD DAMN I wish that dungeon master would come already. I have giant cave spiders that need training.

*a room for all female dwarves with children and/or no significant skills to be burrowed in, with a lovely upright adamantine spear trap hooked to the same lever as my danger room.

Dungeon Masters are currently glitched in this release. They rarely show up and even if they do, they can't tame beasts due to another bug. So you're either going to have to mod your game to tame things or wait until next patch.

Also, you could just limit population or disable babies in your fortress to avoid messy blood baths and tantrums from your "positive population control measures".

"Excellent fortress you have here. I like the design, and these mugs are incredible! You might consider investing in a better militia."

I didn't stand a chance when the goblin siege showed up minutes later.
"Oh, dear. Erm, see if you can get a few soap makers or something into a squad. I prefer getting Helmsrift mugs from the source, and not covered in goblin blood and saliva."
