Population: Is there a cap?
« on: April 27, 2011, 12:11:32 pm »

In a standard game, is there limit to how many people can live in my fort?

I have read many people saying how they have set a population cap somehow.  I did a standard world generation, and standard embark.  Will I eventually hit a point where no more people will show up/be born?  I don't have a problem with people just walking around and doing nothing, its more of just a curiosity.

In your dwarf fortress folder/data/init/d_init.txt, there is a line that says [POPULATION_CAP:200]. If your population exceeds the number in this line, no migrants will come after the end of the current year. Births will still occur regardless of the population cap setting (there's another setting that limits births). This cap is fairly soft, as you'll get more migrants until the end of the current year and can get a full 20+ migrant wave or three even if your population was 1 below the cap at the start of the year, and can be freely altered while a game is running.

To add to what ^ said: The first two migrants waves are hardcoded, even if your civ is destroyed and to change to pop cap while playing you need to load the game again for the chances to work.
