i used to combat train mine before my recent fortress, not a good idea when my top blacksmith gets a broken kidney and 3 red injuries for not fulfilling a mandate

The worse mistake I ever made was to train my Sheriff in weapon skills...

Beatings? What's that? He always beheaded his victims in one strike!

I kinda like the sheriff.  If you hire him from a peasant and don't train him in ANYTHING not even wrestling.  He's good at stopping tantrums by hauling them off to jail, and if you build the jail right they'll be ecstatic when they get released.

But give him a weapon or any kind of combat training and you suddenly have an unrestricted capital punishment justice system. That does indeed suck.

I've consitered making a nightstick weapon that only has an attack power of 1.  That actually makes it weaker than punching, prevents the sheriff from wrestling, and bypasses any natural attacks someone may have modded their race to have...

its always fun to watch my refuse hauler sherrif laying a beatdown on a plate armoured legendary miner.  The sherrif is ok in my books (I try to recruit mine from among the convicts).  Its the hammerer who is a bastard.  Mine always have a habit of getting into arena fights, makes them useful. (allong with his sidekick the tax collector).

In regard to murderous sheriffs...

What's their use other than internal defense of the fort from tratruming and insane dwarves?

Do dwarves are truly intimidated by them and respect mandates and avoid confrontations of fear of the hammer?
