Personal bedroom to dorm ratio
« on: April 27, 2011, 01:14:17 am »

Even with something like Quickfort I find it annoying to designate a bedroom to everyone, so I have been building private rooms for the most unhappy dwarves in my fortress, but ideally I want everyone to have their own room.

How do you guys strategies this dilemma?

I have no dilemma, I build a bedroom for everyone and let them choose. 4x1 size is enough and takes no place, it's also faster than almost all other constructions and designations. One bed, one cabinet. I used to give a chest, but only military dwarves need it, so new civilians get only cabinets. If one dwarf is unhappy, I give him another piece of furniture and that's it. I build them in such a way, that many of the beds are in the same Y or X dimensions.

I only give married couples a room, and I give each married couple a specific nickname as soon as they marry. ("A_Urist" + "A_Kib"). The rest shares a dormitory. They're all ecstatic.

I build 3x1 bedrooms in blocks of 10, radiating outward from the central staircase on a single level.

Code: [Select]
#####.#####
#0C.+.+.C0#   0 = Bed   C = Cabinet
#####.#####
#0C.+.+.C0#
#####.#####
#0C.+.+.C0#
#####.#####
#0C.+.+.C0#
#####.#####
#0C.+.+.C0#
#####.#####...
..............
...........XXX
..............

I'll put a second cabinet in the other space if a dwarf fills up the first one.

I carve out ginormous bedroom complexes. I prefer making them asymmetrical if at all possible just for the aesthetics. Too efficient is boring.

I then add in beds in random small rooms around the fortress that are not part of any bedroom or dorm. The actual bedrooms are on a first come, first serve basis. Those who are too slow to get bedrooms end up slumming in the random beds around the fortress. Seems to work out quite well.

I start with dorms, so there's no point in getting rid of them. Eventually, though, I start carving rows of 2x2 bedrooms. They are first-come-first-served and I haven't had the need to build more than 50.

Macros to create 16 2x2 rooms at a time, with doors in the corners between rooms.

Code: [Select]
#############
#..#..#..#..#
#..#..#..#..#
###+#####+###
#..#..#..#..#
#..#..#..#..#
######+######
#..#..#..#..#
#..#..#..#..#
###+#####+###
#..#..#..#..#
#..#..#..#..#
#############

Then I choose the middle on one of the edges to dig out for a door to access the 16 bedrooms.  And since it's based on an 11x11 area and repeats regularly, I can place them quickly and have 64 bedrooms per level without too much work.

I usually put (1) bed and (3) cabinets in every room.  The first 32-64 rooms get assigned manually to the important dwarves.  After that it's a free-for-all (create the bedroom, leave it assigned to "nobody" and it will get claimed).  Everyone else gets to sleep in the starting dormitories (with 5-12 beds in each one).

I used communal barracks and dormitories in my first fortresses, and it worked well enough. After that I moved to making enough 3x3+ rooms for all the dwarfs, each with bed, door, cabinet, chest/sack, chair and table, and smoothed walls, but that was just too much work. Now I'm exprimenting with something in between: I dig out a big room (23x23 or other Dwarfy number), and place there a grid of beds 2 spaces apart. From those beds I designate 3x3 "rooms" (no overlapping), and let them be claimed by whoever wants. There is plenty of room to put cabinets, coffins or whatever around these beds. Some people even use 1x1 rooms with good effect, but I still want Dwarfs to have cabinets. Of course important Dwarfs, like nobles, still get real rooms.

I give every dwarf a room, because it really isn't that time-consuming. Plus they usually get really pimped out, so there are lots of happy thoughts.

I usually give my dwarves each a 3x3 smoothed with walls engraved room with a cabinet, chest, weapon and armour rack.

The vast majority of my dwarves sleep in the dorm, only nobles that specifically require a bedroom get one of their own.

I make a bedroom for every dwarf.  Seeing as the most dorfs I've had at once is 78, it hasn't been too bad.  I do occasionally have my miners so busy they never get around to expanding the living quarters, though.
