*Journal Entry 5*

Sweet Armok, I'm glad I know how to work with stone after it's been mined.  Cookie asked me to get some tables, chairs and nests made, leaving the defense moat to the others.  Poor guys.  With any luck, they'll be able to spend their breaks in a real dining room, even if it's still rough stone.

The peacock and peahen are looking better now that they have taken to relaxing in the hollowed out hill, along with the other birds and various carnivores.  It's kind of funny, the big carnivores like to hang out near the entrances.  Jake must be training them right, they are being decent watch...animals.  Speaking of Jake, she seems a bit touched.  But she's great with the animals and nice enough.

*Journal Entry 6*

I find it hilarious how poorly we deal with the local wildlife, while at the same time being so protective of our own.  Some tasty irony, and not just because of the fresh meat.

*Journal Entry 7*

Migrants!  They must be crazy to hike all the way here in this heat.  The beekeeper looks like he'll fit in just fine around here.  Seems the only critters we dont have are bees.  I'm sure he'll get a colony or two established soon.  Most of the other new dwarfs have started taking over the defense moat.  It'll be slow going with only newbies, but with this many it shouldn't take more than a season or two.

*Journal Entry 8*

Heh, the crocs are hungry.  They got a marmot a week or so ago, and just got a goat.  I'm glad we have Jake, I wouldn't want those things thinking any of us were food.

*Journal Entry 9*

The hilarious hypocrisy continues, as Cookie got all twitchy about the cavies around and tossed the military at them about two weeks ago.  They happily complied and now have more yaks wandering around.  Maybe the yaks are the natural prey of cavies?  Either way, they are now the natural prey of the military as well.

Going with a morbid sense of humor for her, what with the liking of night creatures, heh.  Very interesting fort going so far.  How hard are the birds and other animals to deal with?  Considering taking animals on my next fort, or at least some birds.  Maybe fiddle with some raws and have a big pit of scary things to feed invaders to...

Anything that doesn't need a pasture is easy to take care of, as they don't need any food yet. Pasture animals need space and grass. So far they seem to be holding up well.

I personally love birds, as the eggs they make really help kick food production into action. Cave Crocs especially lay about 35 eggs a clutch. That's a ton of omlettes. Just remember you need to cook eggs for the dwarves to eat them.

Other than that, the only issues I've had is when a random animal runs up and kicks a pastured or penned animal they will be moved off the pasture, and thus create a job for a dwarf to move them back.

Worst issue is the damn random animals attacking us. I actually had to save scum there at the start, as 2 seconds into the first time I played that season Khenal got randomly kicked in the head by a yak, and killed... Made no logical sense that a herbivore would run into a fortress, into a workshop where the dwarf is chipping away stone, and randomly kill them. I could understand meat eaters, or starving animals, or something. But random herd animals... meh. It's just annoying.

Journal entry 4

WE HAVE BOOZEEEEEEEE....
BECAUSE I'M MAKING IT!
yuppieeeeee yeahhhh...

ehm... i started booze production regularly, and am working my ass out. Just wondering What will happen once all the wood of the trees is gone and we're out of barrels...but who cares? i must just produce Boozeeeee.
Boozeeee.
And a magma moat.
That's not going to be pretty.
Nu-uh.
I hate magma. It's all nice and shiny until somebody burns to death, bringing everything with it...let's hope nobody actually dies...and where are my bridges?!
and for my room...uck...we're all in this together, sang one elf once, before i butchered him, still...do we need to be all so close? they all snore. Not that i mind the ladies being close, but still...

Journal entry 5

What do my eye's see? nothing. Cause i'm making booze. But yet, i managed to hear what happened outside. Some kind of enormously stupid marmot decided she could defeat a crocodile...must i truly tell you how it ended?
Then the all mighty overseer*tm* went on a rampage with the woodcutter and a certain "Jake" who was armed and ready to hunt. They butchered yaks, also...i just so hope to escape unscathed from the woodcutter's clutches, were it the case... Oh yes, we now have migrants. And not so many beds.
and were is my stone? i want stone all around me! all, around, me!
and water...somewhere. why is there no fresh and steamy dwarfen jacuzzi here?

//we truly need to start digging down. and rearranging the stockpiles, since they are too far from...everything else...and is that me in the corner, left all alone, far away, surrounded by only stockpiles of things and animals?...nevermind, i'm fine there XD

*Journal entry four*

Still getting trouble with animals. Some animals help, some animals hinder. It's funny. Strange beer lady says it's iron. I don't see metal, only animals. Lots of them. Especially the lizard ones, they seem rather snappy! Snappy animals, snappers. Snapimals. I had to shoot some animals today. Shootimals. Doesn't have the same ring to it.

*Journal entry five*

We got more people. But not more animals, just a kitty. Old kitty go when new kitty comes. Makes no sense. Oh well. Kitty soft, soft kitty fur.

*Journal entry five*

Snapimals are living up to their name. They snap at animals. Animal snapping is happening. The mamrot. What is a marmot? It's not a nice animal, I don't want one.

*Journal entry six*

More snapimals, all I know is cookie is getting angry at animals. Snapimals are good though. But I like my clawminals better. Big war clawminals. Yes. It's Autumn now. I like Autumn, it's pretty. Like pretty animals. Pretty animals. Animals.

Going to wait until tomorrow to run Autumn, got myself a fairly big head cold, and the headache is keeping me away from playing. Just so people know what's up.

*Journal Entry 10*

You know it's Autumn when the heat is merely unbearable.  Who knows, come winter it may only be hot.  Seems like all the lady animals decided to have babies at the same time.  Looks like Jake will have her hands full.  I've no time to play with the babies, though.  Cookie is getting sick of the wild beasties coming in and wrecking the herds and has called all hands in to dig this ditch.  He even narrowed the thing, so as to get at least something between us and the rest of the world asap.  Diggin' time

*Journal Entry 11*

The latest violent creatures around look like giraffes, but I always thought they were docile?  Regardless, they are messing up the complicated pens that Cookie had set up.  He finally got sick of the disorder and set up a more conventional pasture for the grazers.  I'm still working the defense ditch and trying to show everyone how to swing a pick without hurting themselves/others.  No promises, though...

*Journal Entry 12*

Migrants!  One of them has a pick and the look of somebody who can actually use it.  It'll be nice to have some competent help with this ditch.  Not to insult the others, cause they are really trying.  They just aren't miners.

*Journal Entry 13*

I woke up to the smell of what I thought was a barbeque.  Instead, I learn that the other goat went into the volcano also.  I thought they were used to mountains?  I'll miss that goat, it smelled tasty.

*Journal Entry 14*

The caravan!  I was kinda sad that I didn't get to make any crafts to sell, but apparently Cookie traded some of the excess food.  With all the eggs and such, I'm not surprised we had extra.  The Defense Ditch is about done, and I'll likely get sent to dig down soon.  At least now I'll have another miner to talk to while hitting rock.  Also, the beekeeper is getting antsy to start a few hives.  Maybe I'll get to make a few before starting the mining proper.

Both goats in the lava?  Wow.  What did you do to piss off the local wildlife?  Or is it simply a matter of having so much of the surface occupied that they have more chances to get violent?  Looks like this season was relatively smooth, good luck with winter!

journal entry 6

ahahah! while the other work in the dirt digging or moving animals, i'm here all comfy making booze, drinking eat, and eating it! i might end up a little fatty, but frankly, i'm quite not doing much! just like my great great grandfather Urist McBrewer used to say:"making booze is tough, not making it is tougher in a fortress"
animals enjoy fighting each other...we should build an arena, so they can pump out their stress! also animals suffer from stress.

journal entry 7

when the migrants arrived i thought they had brought more animals, than i realised there were only mens, and one female! i mean, come on, i understand we have a shortage of women around here, but still, bring me more womens! at least the status quo! i'd like to have mini shades walking all around learning how to make booze.
it would be nice.

Journal entry 8
our mighty chief *tm* traded food, prepared masterwork or what you call it food, for things. i mean...come on. food? i wasn't there to see it, but i might expect it went like that:
"you hungry?"
"yeah, a little bit"
"here you go chap eat till your filled!" "nam nam good!" "glad to hear that, it's 20K dwarfbucks" "wh...what!?"
then the caravan left...poor caravan members.

journal entry 9
i nearly forgot two things!!! the heat here is so terrible, that goats would rather drink LAVA than stay thirsty...and they fight over lava control with a giraffe...i knew it.
on second notes...when are we going to dig DOWNwards?

ARGH!!! Stupid dwarves are stupid. I'm save scumming, but I thought I'd let you see how our wonderful military thought it was a good idea to dive into the volcano. ALL OF THEM... They didn't even pull the damn giraffe in with them, it's just fine, ready to go kick a rabbit to death at random... *frustration*

*Journal Entry 15*

I had another odd dream.  The last one was several months ago, and I dreamed I was crafting in my workshop when a Yak of darkest night kicked my skull in!  This one, the military did a kind of reverse polar bear club thing and dived into the volcano.  Said the lava was fine.  Dreams are weird.

*Journal Entry 16*

Cookie finally gave the order to dig down and look for the caverns.  About time.  Even "Winter" around here is sweltering.  Can't wait to find a nice, cool cavern to relax in.

*Journal Entry 17*

Found the first cavern layer a few days ago.  We adjusted our stair well and continued down and found the second layer as well.  We were well on our way down to the third when Erith decides he needs a break from all the mining.  I told him I'd break his skull if he slacks off too much.  It seems I'll never get the chance to, now.  Cookie just came down the shaft and told me to get making a coffin.  A what?  I figured one of the more cuddly animals had kicked it and Cookie wanted to give it a proper burial.  It wasn't until I got up top and saw Erith's battered corpse that I realized we had lost a Dwarf.  Oh Erith...

*Journal Entry 18*

The military is doing their damnedest to make sure Erith's tomb can be decorated in giraffe bones.  All my life, I had thought giraffes to be gentle.  How wrong I was.  I hope they give those giraffes hell, Erith was a good man.

*Journal Entry 19*

It wasn't until after interring Erith that I noticed the wall around the caldera of the volcano.  There's still some small gaps in it, but it looks mostly safe now.  I'm headed down to help the others find the third cavern layer.  With any luck, this one will actually have water for us.

*Journal Entry 20*

Found the final cavern layer, and it does indeed have water.  Cookie has ordered a well shaft dug down to it from the surface.  I don't get why he wants it that far, but whatever.  It provides more practice for mining before we get heavy into using the various ores we've found.  It's not so bad when just normal rock gets pulverized into dust instead of a proper boulder, but ruining ores can be costly.  Looks like Cookie is stepping down as leader, as is Dwarven Tradition.  The hopefuls drew straws and Jake, of all people, won.  I have my doubts, but she is good with the animals.  The sarcastic in me wonders how different handling Dwarves can be...

Loving it so far, even the save-scumming.  Poor Erith, I didn't expect his death to have that big of an impact on Khenal.  After seeing he was a miner, and that she had to build his coffin, though, I knew it would hit her pretty solidly.  How many full on miners are there now, and who's the most skilled?  Is Khenal still doing much mining, or is she mostly in the shops now?  Which reminds me, I think things can still fall in the volcano through the diagonals.  Looks like you've given an excellent start, and good luck to Jake for the next year!

Not sure about who's the most skilled. I think everybody has done at least some mining. And yeah the gaps in the volcano wall need to be plugged. I forgot to mention, but Jake should deconstruct those floors and replace them with walls. As most of them were made to create a platform to make a diagnal wall on.

Therapist says I'm the best miner.  Erith must have been the migrant miner then, dang :(  I couldn't resist downloading the save and taking a look around.  It's amazing how different this fort is from how I tend to build mine.  That's quite the defense ditch, you actually got the entire map, looks like!

Yeah this is deffinately different. I usually have more solid rooms, I just focused on getting the animals taken care of, while throwing everything else out into temporary spots.

At least for everything in the main area, I think the food stockpile and poultry hill works out nicely. If a bit open to the outdoors.
