What I'd like to know are the difficulties (heroïc =? Average =?).

The difficulties are defined in creature.h -- they run from automatic (1) to impossible (19) in steps of two. Since impossible is higher than 6+6+6, it's literally impossible.  The names imitate the EABA tabletop RPG difficulty ratings that the unified roll system is loosely based on, with the exception that EABA's impossible is 21, since you can roll a little higher under that system. EABA is only slightly different -- it rolls dice equal to 1/3 of your skill plus attribute, keeps the top three dice, and allows up to a +2 bonus based on any remainder ability points not turned into dice or extra dice beyond three. I used odd dice instead of flat bonuses, since it smooths the advancement curve a bit.

This was the best system I was able to find for allowing you to develop your power level and still have a small but rapidly diminishing chance of failure, while giving a slow diminishing returns effect. If you're lucky, any challenge is possible at level 6 in the appropriate skill since 6 skill + 6/2 attribute = 9, which gives you three full dice. Higher skill and attribute levels will give you much greater consistency in your ability to meet those goals. For example, 20 sword skill and 20 agility gives you a massive pool of ten full dice to draw your top three from, so you almost never miss, even under extreme difficulty.

Sorry if this might seem stupid, but I'm not really good with coding:

I checked the combat files, and I wondered about the dodge roll:

Is the dice pool divided by 2, or is the end roll divided by 2?

The result is divided by 2. So the potential range of results is mapped to 0-9, instead of 1-18. It does this to keep anyone from being too invincible, given that the dodge roll only helps set the challenge level for the opponent's attack roll.

That explain why I keep getting hit by Police and CCS members despite a 16 AG and Dodge.

I've been away for a while, so forgive me if this has been gone over a lot, but why isn't there an option at the start for the CCS to start out inactive and then become active during gameplay? It looks to me like there's easy peasy mode, medium-hard mode, and super hard mode. With no medium-easy, which is typically how I play games because I'm a wimp.

edit: derp, i think pressing any key makes it normal mode like that? i fail

I think the CCS is activated later by default? I think.

Anyway, having literally just got into this game, I'm shocked at having been missing out. This game kicks ass and is my go-to game when I get that 'my Steam list is kinda unappealing right now' feeling, which has been happening a lot lately.

Just a few quick questions and comments.
A. First, what affects sleeper effectiveness if they are laying low? Is it random or do you influence it? In the wiki it claims you can spout Conservatism but it seems the only option is promoting Liberalism, so sleeper effectiveness seems to  be uncontrollable.
B.Next does persuasion affect an interrogator's ability to raise heart or is it simply psychology and heart?
C. Would it be possible to institute a way of backing out of recruitment? It seems dumb but I occasionally find that after a long period of raids, or a really exciting moment I might slip and hit the recruit key by accident on someone who is fairly useless. It would be similar to when talking with a third option to say "On second thought they aren't Liberal enough to join our cause" or something.  Then the dialogue would change to simply say the recruit is excited a screen later if you confirm their recruitment.

Let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time, in the earliest versions of LCS, you couldn't control sleepers at all. Once you have a sleeper, he'd just be promoting Liberalism 'till the day he dies. What we would call "Sleeper Effectiveness" was a constant, but I would suppose "higher" than it is today because sleepers back then would directly impact public opinion. Later on, the Sleeperdom System was overhauled, allowing you to tell your Sleeper what to do. Not only could your sleepers promote liberalism, but they could also embezzle money, steal secrets, or recruit other sleepers to your cause.

To balance that, a new system called "Sleeper Effectiveness" was created to serve as a modifier on how successful your Sleepers' actions are. You lose effectiveness when you are conducting Liberal actions (such as Promoting Liberalism), but you gain effectiveness when you either "Lay Low" or "Promote Conservatism". The problem is that this sort of system encourages too much micromanagement of your sleepers and it makes the LCS seem like a cynical Illuminati-style organization (outright promoting conservatism to build up effectiveness before you turn your sleeper to promote Liberalism during election period) rather than as an insane terrorist organization. At first, Promoting Conservatism was removed; you can gain effectiveness through just Laying Low and lose effectiveness when you are Promoting Liberalism. But even that encourages micromanaging to ensure your sleepers are able to affect society during election time. Today, Laying Low and Promoting Liberalism does not impact Effectiveness at all: instead, effectiveness randomly varies from month to month but generally stay within a certain range (probably this range is impacted by who you recruited, and how you recruited him: a Arch-Conservative News Anchor you brainwashed may have higher Sleeper Effectiveness than a random Moderate bloke).

So, no, you can't raise Effectiveness, but at the same time, you can't lower it either, so it's all works out in the end.

"Hey, where are you all going?"

Home, sir!

"But... you're incarcerated for being with the LCS!"

Oh, thaaaaat. LCS is gone, man. It's long gone. Everything's cool now. We're goin' home.

"Huh. Makes sense. Have a nice day."

<30 minutes later>

"Wait a minute...!"

<a minute later>

"...it doesn't make sense at all!"

In my games (which I started not to long ago, mind you) my sleeper effectiveness is always low around 15%-20% when they start off. If I make them lay low for a long time (a year and a half or so) it increases to 100% and stays. If I make them promote liberal ideas it lowers it around 2% every couple months.

So I've finally got around to spending some time in the linux half of my machine...it doesn't seem to like LCS, though.

It refuses to let me just run ./boostrap and ./configure as the README says it should.  Okay, fine.  I can run them specifically as shell scripts.

sh ./bootstrap appears to work fine.

sh ./configure is outputting an error.
Code: [Select]
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler works... yes
checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out
checking for suffix of executables...
checking whether we are cross compiling... configure: error: in `/media/Data/Downloads/lcs_4.04.0_src/lcs_4.04.0_src':
configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.

The listed dependencies are installed.  In fact, I've successfully built and run ncurses apps before, so I'm not sure why this is whining.  Any particular ideas?

For reference, this machine is running Mint Debian.

You've got gcc and permissions set up properly?

EDIT: I suggest that you move LCS it to your home directory and try there, a friend had a similar error message for trying to compile in a naughty area.
