new fortress start, dwarves drown in pool after ~3 secon
« on: February 28, 2008, 11:39:00 am »

Start new game, pause immediately. Start location next to murky pools. Placed stockpiles behind pools. Unpaused. Dwarves drowned in pools instead of walking around them.

1. generated new world and started fortress in 176.38b

2. Start location was on a high-elevation grass area next to some murky pools, some 5 levels above the river.

3. I paused immediately on start, and assigned stockpiles (and stairs down to the planned fortress entrance, and a good part of that entrance, to be dug, plus treecutting and plantpicking etc). The stockpiles were a good screen-height to the north. Seen from the dwarves POV, the stockpiles were "behind" those murky pools.

4. I unpaused the game for the first time now. The dwarves picked up items to carry to the stockpiles. Two of them drowned seconds later, trying to carry items straight through the pool.

(Usually dwarves walk around pools, right?)

Unfortunately I have no backup of this save.

I never bother with above ground stockpiles.  I leave it in the waggon until I have an indoor stockpile.

Were there fish in the pool?  Like, for example, carp?

Benoit: Sorry, I didn't check for fish.

I got a message saying "[dwarf] cancels bring item to stockpile", I think it was "dangerous terrain", and then "[dwarf] drowned], then "[dwarf] cancels bring item to stockpile, unaccessible"

On third thoughts: Maybe the water was frozen and unfroze at that very moment that my dwarves ran across? I thought it must be a pathing bug but most games seem to start in spring, with the water thawing soon after game start.

I seem to always end up with worlds where the water never freezes, so I'd forgotten about that, but that is the other best possibility.  One of my first forts, I wondered why I seemed to need a new woodcutter every spring.
