Dwarf Fortress: A Link to The Past
« on: April 26, 2011, 12:26:33 am »

I have been playing DF for a few years now, and I finally deem myself worthy of beginning my first real megaproject.

I intend to recreate all the dungeons from Zelda: A Link to the Past. I have already begun construction on Emedir (Eastdungeon) and I am remaining as faithful to the original dungeon as possible.

Ideas? Suggestions?

You know the classic "Light the torch to open the door" Puzzle?  Change "Fire" to "Magma".

The only problem I can think of is the "kill everything to open a door" rooms.

Pressure plates liked to the door, placed on every floor tile and triggered by the monsters? You'd have to kill all the creatures before they're completely off the plates... of course, this setup might take a while to assemble.

I can think of a way... Put a pasture on top of a pressure plate which opens the doors, with a long hallway that stretches away from the room. Make sure the hallway can see into the room but can't be accessed by it, such as with a window or fortification. Pit a tame animal into the hallway and link it to the pasture. The animal should run away from the monsters in the room, causing the doors to shut, but when the monsters are dead it should go back to its pasture and make the doors open again.

My eventual plan is to have every dungeon from A Link to the Past (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zelda:_A_Link_to_the_Past) in a single world. Each complete with the requisite artifacts, monsters and puzzles.

The dungeon I am currently working on (East Dungeon):

The only part I'll have trouble replicating is the hallway with the rolling boulders. Any suggestions as to how I could translate this into DF would be appreciated.

For optimum authenticity, make sure your embark includes an upright adamantine "Master Sword".

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

For optimum authenticity, make sure your embark includes an upright cotton candy stick.
Fixed.

Can't you just use stone fall traps for rolling boulders? Maybe a row of them.

Re-fixed - there is no such thing as "cotton candy", and you'll note that I never made any mention of the environment in which upright adamantine swords appear. Besides, players can "find" upright swords without ever knowing anything about them, whether via the Stocks screen or by trying to link a lever to an upright spike.

All my trips to the carnival were lies D:. Dumb pink stuff.
Anyway, I think all this using of the big top and the clowns in the big top not to mention the circus tent below the cotton candy is a big confusing :3.
Back on top, you should make cages on the specific spots and have each door have a pressure plate that opens said cages.

For the rolling boulders, stone-fall traps would probably work best and be the most authentic. The only other thing I can think of is a pressure plate-activated cave-in system, but there are some obvious problems and dangers there.

Also, this project is amazing. I'll be following intently.
