Forgotten beasts can (and will) destroy grates.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Just make sure to make a small scale, 3-4 z-levels, pump stack before starting the main one to make sure you have it figured out. The two things I screwed up on my first try is that pumps can't pump from the same level or through stairs.

I though that there is a glitch where monsters cannot deconstruct stuff thats 1 lvl higher than them?

Grates are vertical I think, so not applicable to the situation.

Since it's been totally forgotten that you've never built one before and all the graphics show 'side-on views', here's a top down view.

Code: [Select]
WWWWWW
WOIoFW
WWGFWW
WWWXWW

W=Wall
O=Open Space
I=Pump, Water Inflow
o=Pump, Water Outflow
F=Constructed/Natural Floor
G=Gear Assembly for Power Transfer
X=Up/Down Stairs

Trouble is that this is EXPENSIVE in terms of power. And since all that power has to be generated, it's also hard on the frame rate.

I've been considering an alternative pump stack. Instead of gearing power to the various pumps, it runs two separate pump stacks with power on either side transferred through Vertical Axles. So instead it's:

Code: [Select]
WWWWWWWW
WOIoFFFW
WWFXWWFW
WWWWVFFW
WWWWWWWW

Same as above but V=Vertical Axle

Ultimately it'll cost less power than a single stack. And the design is simply reversed for each level.

Um, the standard pump stack doesn't use gear assemblies at all. Power is transferred through the pumps - you channel out the floor under the impassible tile of the pump to transfer power to the pump below it.

Top down view of each level before installing the pump and doors:
Code: [Select]
Level Z:

WWWWWW
W.+.+W
WW+W+W
W+++XW
WWWWWW

Level Z-1:

WWWWWW
W+.+.W
W+W+WW
W+++XW
WWWWWW

W = Wall
+ = floor
. = channel
X = staircase

Top down view after installing pumps and doors:
Code: [Select]
Level Z:

WWWWWW
W.%%+W
WWDWDW
W+++XW
WWWWWW

Level Z-1:

WWWWWW
W+%%.W
WDWDWW
W+++XW
WWWWWW

W = Wall
+ = floor
. = channel
%% = pump
D = door
X = staircase

If you dig the stack correctly, the game won't let you install the pump in the wrong direction.

Ah... now I learn that I can transfer through the impassable tile? Lovely.

Oh well, still works out well to drop a lot of Magma lag.

It was my understanding that said "glitch" is entirely bogus and that creatures are absolutely capable of destroying grates and hatches immediately above themselves (but that it would take a long time).

I want to try one with magma myself but its a headache to even start to plan out.

I've done it before. It's not worth it.
