OK, i've never built a pumpstack before...
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:26:23 pm »

the tutorials are a bit spread out and kind of overwhelming, but the only water on this map is 160 lvls down and i just cant make my dwarves walk that far to get to the hostipal.

i need to move this stuff up here to where we are.

anyone link me to a nice easy step by step walkthrough of how do do this please?

Have you taken a look at the images and animations at the bottom of this page? They're as helpful as any guide I've read on the matter.

This plus a little experimentation should be all you need...

At least you're only pumping water and can make it out of whatever materials you like!  ;D

Yes, pump stacks take a long time to build, and are fragile.

You will need a 3x4 area that can be opened up (so 5x6 including the outer walls).  The pump stack is only 1x4, but you also need a 1x4 access area for every level, plus 1x4 for the wall between the access area and the pump stack.

And you don't *have* to build it exactly in that manner, that's just the most efficient model that doesn't waste energy/materials on gears/axles.

And one block - not a stone, a block. The easiest place to make them is at a masonry, since you probably have a huge surplus of stone - construct rock blocks on repeat. I like to build one or two masonries dedicated to low skill masons and just have them churn out blocks.

I'm actually in the midst of a rather large and hoity toity tower project at the moment, so i've got LOTS of blocks lying around.
about 92 of them, are the wrong kind of stone for the tower, so i just gotta make 70 or so more.
that's kinda good news right?

That's the dwarven way, mate. Never waste anything, unless it's an elf or a goblin.

(Loved your rap, by the way.)

the tutorials are a bit spread out and kind of overwhelming, but the only water on this map is 160 lvls down and i just cant make my dwarves walk that far to get to the hostipal.

If you only need a water source for cleaning and drinking, you could dig a shaft down the 160 levels and build a well at the top.  You need a spot to put it, which may not be available on some maps or if you've already tunnelled stuff.  But it's easier than building a 160-level pump stack.  I know, I've done that for magma before.

I'd think twice before doing that - it takes a long time to lower the bucket down 160 Z-levels and pull it back up each time somebody needs water. Also, winged forgotten beasts will fly up the well shaft and eat your doctors.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
