Job for giving water and food to wounded does not exist.
« on: February 28, 2008, 12:07:00 am »

I left my computer running for a while with dwarf fortress on while i went to do some other stuff for about 10 mins, came back, found two legendaries dead from "thirst". Upon careful inspection and background checks, these were both wounded dwarves who, apparently, had not gotten any water while they were resting.

I do a ctrl-alt-del, restarted the game, and found out that the [j]ob for giving anyone water or food did not exist at all. They were both dehydrated. I made some no-named peasant only have "healthcare" on and nothing else, to guarantee they would get the water. Still nothing, he moped around for a long time, not taking any jobs. I tried it with another dwarf; same thing, no job. I knew we had plenty of free buckets, that wasn't the problem or else i'd have gotten spammed with the lack of buckets announcement (yes i had all announcements on).

Then i tried to deconstruct the beds they were both sleeping in, since their wounds weren't too severe (only severe enough to be bedridden) and sure enough, they got up and walked to my barracks, to again, rest. This time, however, i noticed one of my "healthcare only" peasants was right on the job, went to get the bucket, got stuck in cow traffic, and gave up and went to bed. Then i looked at the job list again and, once again, the job had disappeared.

It seems that when a job to give food or water was being cancelled by the dwarf, it did not reappear as a selectible job for any other dwarf, and so the bed ridden dwarves sat there dying of hunger and thirst.

I tried once more to destroy their barracks beds, and again they got up, went on to the next closest free bed, laid down to rest. But this time no dwarf took up the task of giving water or food. I'm pretty sure its a bug unless im missing something very very specific... But its strange because no one else has made this complaint as far as i know, and i did check the bugs and searched for this. So what is it, is this a known bug? Or am i missing something more preventable?

People make this complaint just about every day. As far as I know, your only hope is to have a huge number of "nurses: (as in healthcare only) until they decide to feed and water the injured.

Some folks are reporting that if you make a fresh bucket some one will pick it up and use it to water the thirsty dwarfs.

Hm, ill try making a new bucket. It seems like resetting the circumstances in some way helps motivate dwarves to remember the job.

I thought another generally accepted solution was "undraft them from the military":  military dwarves often get ignored.  I might be wrong though.  (And of course I guess that doesn't help when they are legendary)

I heard this somewhere and I found it works... certain dwarves do healthcare more than others, based on their personality (moved to pity, or something).

Also, having a couple of extra buckets helps, not just one or two, for some reason.

That pretty much just doesn't work: the job doesn't exist.  So the nurses stand around doing nothing while the wounded starve.  I had a nurse complain about *lack of work* even with 20 wounded.  Needless to say, they all died.

Tricking the game into reissuing the health care job *does* work, however.

What do you mean the job doesn't exist? Has it been removed from the code?

Hit [j] and look at the Job List.  It doesn't exist.
