I think Cotton Candy should be allowed, only if you release the clowns. As that's what /should/ happen.

Meanwhile, think I might try the desert embark. Is it alright to switch to a 2x2 embark? Get the spike in the corner. Been dealing with some FPS issues lately, and want to keep things smooth.

Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point?

Remembering that the challenge forbids workshops outside the spike, how will you create a magma smelter without years of intensive work on a pump stack to haul magma near the surface? (Unless you don't coinsider a furnace to be a workshop, but where's the fun in that?)

If you can spend the time to set up an elaborate liquids system, then you deserve free smelting. Whether the effort is worth the reward is up to you.

---

These are just the suggested embarks, so feel free to move slightly around to suit your need. If you embark on the VERY south eastern part of the map, you will actually get no surface grass, unlike the little splodge available before- just remember that before your horses and things die.

Is there any way you can post the worldgen info?

Put the World Gen parameters up on the main post.

Well started this out in the south eastern most point of the desert spike. Been a rough season and it's not even summer yet.

I started with a hunter, but didn't get the hunt job turned off quick enough, so he went out and emptied all the bolts we had into a camel. And didn't even manage to kill it. So I drafted him to the military as I had planned in the first place, and sent him after the wounded camel. Was going well, but he couldn't finish the creature off, even though it was covered in wounds. Then the camel got back up, kicked the poor hunter in the hand breaking it, and thus dooming him the death of the water only injured.

I brought about 30 logs with me, so we are ok for now on that route. I've started digging into the spike, and moving things inside, as well as getting a dining room worked out to combat the moods that are now wavering because the hunter seemed to have two friends and two grudges, so everyone gets some sort of mood change.

Forgot about the horses, so they are now starving. I've set them to be slaughtered, if nothing else, should be some hides and bones at least. I didn't bring any other grazing animal, but I've got a decent dog pack, and quite a few egg layers to keep us fed. However, I know migrants will bring more grazers, I can kill the ones that arn't pets, but those pets I'm not quite sure what I'm going to deal with yet.

I wonder, how would one generate cliffs like this? Or even cube mountains?

My expedition leader has written a small report on how things have gone so far, although nothing really interesting happened.

I wonder how such a small, ugly and useless thing could endanger mental health of my friend. It's awfull and it can happen to anyone of us.

Nothing interesting has happened? This alone makes the scene all the more real! I hope to hear more from your expedition leader.  :D

Nice, it looks like you're working with the spire fine. I always spend way too much time planning fort defence, then getting nothing done. What's good is all that unmined interior of the spike could potentially house those magma/water pumps, if you don't want to place them outside. Then you could give underfloor heating to those bedrooms!

How do i get the rar that i downloaded into my saves?

Download Winrar (it's nagware, so it will ask you to buy it, but doesn't force you to.) and use it to extract the .rar file. It will provide you with the region save.

here's the report fot the Year 10.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It would be difficult for me to post screenshots because the fort spreads numerous z-levels up the spike, but i'll pick some and edit the post once i get familiar with the post image feature.
EDIT: this is going to be tonight at best

Rather than use Winrar (which, as you say, is Nagware and thus sucks), use 7Zip. It's free, no nagware, and will unpack (but not pack) .RAR files.

sorry for the OT, but I've become a 7zip evangelist and nagware hater in recent years ;)

BTW, I've started my own fort on the cliff.... it's not cliffy enough so I'm cutting it down to vertical. hopefully there's enough marble on the map to sheath the entire cliff face.... I like marble.

yep, year 11 report
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I start thinking of carving a one-shot magma piston now, and with a little magma i can really make some stupid megaproject.

EDIT: i've updated it with the news from granite, 12, because then my expedition leader has gone stark raving mad and i guess we will not hear from her anymore.

I generated a fresh copy from the worldgen parameters and ended up settling on the Medium Challenge.  I meant to do the desert one, but misunderstood the location.  That's okay.  Anyway, the Medium Challenge location is reproducible and stable from a fresh worldgen.
