"Rainy Day" Games
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:56:36 pm »

So, I have come to the conclusion that I don't own nearly enough games to keep me occupied. My source of "new" games come from various freeware I pick up reading this forum. That's all fine and dandy, assorted MMOs can keep me eternally entertained.

However, when those times come where I have no internet, I am stuck with the games I have sitting on my hard drive; no more, no less. This is pretty much all I do:

Minecraft for 15 minutes, get extremely bored and quit it. Open up GIMP, use a shitton of Filters on an image to create a background. Ok, that's done, moving on. Open up DF, start a fortress for a few minutes, frown at the randomly generated landscape, restart. Continue this five times, get bored, quit DF. Start up DooM 1/2. Finish the first five maps, get bored, type in IDDQD/IDKFA. Finish 9/10 of the game, quit DooM. Turn on WinAMP, play the same songs I have heard a thousand times over, and stare idly at the screen until about 4 o'clock, restating the process a few times within that timeframe.

What can you guys suggest that would break this endless boring cycle? I skimmed over the "Free Games List" topic, but due to it not having nearly enough information for me to judge a game on, I kind of quit using it after downloading a few of the games.

I am not a fan of rougelikes if they have no tileset available, I am not a fan of arcade/card games of any type, and I am not one to own fast internet (Please keep the downloads near or below 100MB). I am big fan of quality freeware, sandboxes, 4x, and physics games.

I'd say browse 4chan look into more strategy games if you like 4x.
I'm thinking Total War or CK or some other paradox game or something. I'm sure you could get some at 100% off at exclusive digital download sites if you're not willing to shell out 5 dollars on a game.

Try out the Europa Universalis 3 demo, buy full version for ~$15.00 if you like it.  Its the single player game that i've sunk the most play time into; around 300 hrs.  You could also follow it a bit and wait for the game + xpacks to go on sale.

Elona shooter! It's a flash game, and a shooter. Tiles are irrelevant!

Edit: Oops, maybe I should try reading. I can only recommend Iji off the top of my head.

For some reason, I think you're wrong.

I'd say Cortex Command. I rarely play it, but it is great fun. You do have to buy it to play the full version though.

If you like DOOM: DooMRoguelike.

Cave Story.

If you've got any Source games (and if you haven't... Just go out and buy Orange Box ffs), download a bunch of Source mods. I can tell you some decent ones if you like.

Edit : Suggestions - some seconding (divided by "series") :-

Daggerfall / Redguard / Battlespire (big downloads, but great)

The rest are small downloads :-

X-Com 1 and 2 - These are games where you could literally play for half and hour at a time, meaningfully, adding towards a campaign.

and my contributions :-

Master of Orion I and II (Ultra-classic streamlined and fun 4X). I prefer # 1 in the series

STAR CONTROL II

Seriously, check this game out! (sandbox, space rpg, combat, good story)

Try Score Doom. It's an addon that adds a few hundred enemy types (from other 2.5D games, as well as more/less elaborate edits of existing ones) and places them semi-randomly in place of the normal Doom ones. It also adds alt-fire modes to existing weapons. And there's also something about keeping track of score in this, but I never cared about that. To me this never got boring because nearly every encounter was somewhat different. Plus there's a boss rush waiting for you at the end of each episode.
