Transforming Dwarves [33f]
« on: December 17, 2007, 09:05:00 pm »

This has been just a weird week for me with DF. First the Picasso Waterfall. Then I save that for later, generate a new world. I picked a dark grey mountain tile, the non hollow one, exposed by a river. It's pretty neat, there's a river East to West on the North half and 20+ levels of Cliff to the South half, and the whole thing cut East to West by a large chasm. Only 1 tile wasn't mountain, so it would let me embark (the far NW). Started by pausing it, giving an order to bridge the chasm, then unpaused. My carpenter started hauling up logs, then all my dwarves turned blue. Upon further inspection, they're all Hydras, Titans, a bronze colossus, and Dragons now. er...? It's not modded, and if it was I couldn't pick more than 1 race to play as anyway. I'm going to wait for immigrants to see what they turn out to be... That and all but the bronze colossus have potential mates, so this might be interesting.

Let the goblins come! Mwahahahahhahhahahha! !!golbin*insertparthere*!! everywhere!
Makes me wish I had actually cheated and started w/ 20 some 'dwarves'. I'm going to test adventure mode and see what the dwarves look like there. (I've backed up the Fortress mode save).

How do I tell what race a creature is if it has a name? All I see is a blue 'Abul somethingunprnouncable, Guard'. I choose to play as a 'dwarf' with maxed out axe skill, and so far I've taken out 3 steel plated guard taking no damage...

You find the best bugs. First the waterfall now an army of mega creatures. Can any of them work?

They all work just like dwarves. I'm waiting for something to attack to see if the dragons really do breathe fire.
Anyone want the save? Where should I upload it?

Yes, it needs to be uploaded, so toady can maybe figure out what the HELL happened. use sendspace or something, the wiki should explain what files you need to include (iirc its just the entire regionX folder for that world from under the data/save directory). Be sure to compress it first, preferably using .zip.

Emailed it to toady the great, with a request to wiki it. If he does, there's lots of bauxite there, but no magma to my knowledge. A fair amount of gems and I spotted some tetrahedrite veins as well.

Indeed. Probably the best bug I've ever come across in a game (provided they do breathe fire.)

And you weren't using any utilities?  I haven't checked it yet, but my first guess is that the variable that says which id number to start at wasn't set properly.  This would lead to your dwarves being given id number like 1, 2, 3 etc., which would link them to the oldest creatures in the world, which are likely the mega beasts.  It sets the id number based on the files in your region folder.  I suppose it could also have happened if the files weren't accessible when the game was started.  I probably won't be able to get much more out of it than that, but I'll take a look at it.

I don't handle the wiki.

So his dwarves are the seven most ancient beasts in his world?

Amazing.

This is... awesome. I'd just call it an undocumented feature, if I were you. Oh, and could you maybe upload that save, somewhere?

No utilities. None even officially work for 33f anyway.
So... The 7 most ancient beings of the realms have conglomerated into some sort of alliance for riches and glory? Cool.
Lol:
-a vegan dragon cook     :p
-a dragon carpenter, the creator of 7 magnificent !!+beds+!!      :p
-A titan miner, he mines rather fast actually      :p

Will the immigrants be assigned id numbers starting from 8 then? I could have the 200 oldest beings in a giant retirement home.

When were those particular files inaccessible Toady? I'd like to try to recreate this. When starting a fortress?

Alright it is now on mediafire. The save is just a few seconds after I realized what happened.
So far, it doesn't seem any different. They all still have dwarven anatomy under the wounds list (the hydras should have 6 heads right?).
All but the 'bronze colossus' have mates, so see what these things breed. Also, I have yet to try to get the 'dragons' to breathe fire. I think it's possible the immigrants will turn into mega beasts (or whatever had id#8 and up) too if Toady is correct.
Looks like they're just dwarves with a mega beast title under their name. Eh. Still cool. Perhaps they're reincarnated mega beasts?

Feel free to criticize my starting setup and location.      :p
Oh yes, and a movie of this is up at the map archive place. Not much, just shows  off the mega beast titles. I'll put up a video of them roasting goblins if they actually can, (so far I doubt it).

Well, has anyone confirmed whether or not these can act like mega beasts? Try to drown the bronze colossus, it shouldn't have to breathe.
I'd do it myself, but I'm going to be busy for awhile.
