<Snip>

Pardon my French but what the hell were you talking about? Is this some sort of invocation of Godwins law?

Yes.  It is.  Yadda yadda, I lost the argument, but I thought it was appropriate.

What I meant was to just have people state their religion (or lack thereof ), when they apply for a passport.

The pedophile was just the trigger to the bullet. This really is more of a hate the TSA thread.

Ok! Wait, we hate the TSA? Why would we hate such a thing?

Because they have put in place full body scanners and have been unable to stop situations like this. Might I reference the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba030UmbkCo

Dammit vector. I thought that was godwins law...

But as I see it, religion is nothing more than a concept. Its up to us to how we act. We choose what we are. If I was muslim, would that automatically make me more likely to be a terrorist? No. It is myself that dictates my actions.

As I said, it was indeed Godwin's law.

I still think it's ridiculous to make it so that people have to identify their religions or whatever on their passports.  I'm kind of leery of having any more information about myself in the system than already exists.

I don't understand how putting your religious information onto your passport would do any good at all.

But the definition of religion is not important here.

I don't mean to offend anyone and I do realize that the vast majority of Muslims are very good people but I would say that Muslims are more likely to e terrorists than little girls.

Yeah, so am I. But I feel this would help at least a little.

Nope, I am suggesting it though.

Why are you offended?

I seriously don't get it. You're somehow making a connection between the guy's pedophilia and TSA?

But seriously, I think a better way would be to just look at the religion of people. Its an ugly way to run things but this is an ugly situation.
Could you explain what you mean by "looking at the religion of people"?

Listing religion on passport (if they don't already do that, that is). My point here is that the most likely terrorists would, in fact, be Muslim extremists. Of course there would be ways to bypass this and I'll be thinking about that.
How many terrorists travel using their own passport?

That is so not the case.

http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/terrorism-2002-2005/terror02_05

Going just from 2002, only two of the seven acts classified as terrorism were performed by Muslims (although one was the largest) and one was attempted against Muslims.

From that, I'm more worried about animal-rights activists.

Information aside, it strikes me as unseemly that you'd ever be required to write down which religion you call yourself.  What if you convert?  Heck, what if you lie?  Does it count as falsifying documents, to claim you believe in a spiritual text that you really don't, or vice versa?  And why would anyone ever need to know that?  Declaring a race makes sense, because it makes you easier to identify on sight, but it's kinda hard to identify a body by their religion unless you're carrying prayer beads or something.

Wait, to travel overseas you need to clarify your religion? Is this a US of A thing or a global thing?

Goddammit, no.  That's exactly what people are saying shouldn't be the case, because it isn't now.  Somebody here proffered the idea and it's being shot down, don't complicate things.

Well, there are some countries that demand a declaration of religion on a passport.  They tend to be the countries with "right" and "wrong" religions, i.e. not the US.

I'm going to let this idea die because Aqqizar's was way better.

The UK and Australia ask all it's inhabitants to fill in census forms with amongst others their religion if I recall correctly (could be a part of them to get an estimate for the whole population). One time they got 1% Pastafarianism. They were not amused...

Edit: It apparently was Jedi. Pastafarianism is running for the 2011 census "elections".

...What the fuck do you mean, "my" idea?  You already declare a race on pretty much any government document.  I'm not coming up with ideas at all, I'm making a comparison to real world thing.

Dammit man, have you ever even seen a passport?

I would say that Muslims are more likely to e terrorists than little girls.

And if I were a terrorist in this situation (who really, really wanted to get the job done more than anything else), I'd plant the bomb on the little girl.  In a body cavity, if possible.  I'd also pretend to be Israeli.

Just saying.

Also, I am not a terrorist, and would never kill or hurt anyone outside of extreme circumstances.  I also love this country, as much as it bothers me sometimes.
