Bans seem a bit out of hand...
« on: April 24, 2011, 11:28:02 am »

isn't it sad that when talking about bans on this site it's as though someone died because nearly all if not all entirely seem to be perma bans? i get that with the traffic here it's incredible that only 2 admins run this whole forum but that more speaks to having more moderators then just swinging the ban hammer like guard captain in the middle of failed mandate season.

quite honestly i do expect to be banned for this thread and thank armok for floating IP's. im' not taking the piss out of Three Toe or Toady One, i'm just being honest.

I may or may not agree with you.

I can't really say, because I'm scared I'll be banned.

It's because if you do something bad enough that Toady bans you it has to be bad enough to warrant a perma-ban. Besides, even if you don't get banned you already ostricized yourself by going against Word of Toad.

So no, not sad. Toady's actually the best Moderator I've ever seen. He's lenient, but no-one breaks the rules out of respect for him. A rule-breaker is seen as directly spitting in Toady's face. Perma-banning is the only way to preserve their lives. Ever hear of Krakatoa?  :P

The moderation log is also fairly deceptive, it doesn't show the mutes/warnings that have gone out, only the things that are currently active. Also, MOST of the bans that have gone out are to the same person, frankly I'm fairly surprised you don't see more bans, but the community is pretty well behaved most of the time...

I may or may not agree with you.

One thing to note is that Toady removes temporary mutes and suchlike from the Moderation Log, presumably to prevent confusion and to make clear that once a punishment is over, it's over. Retaining such logs makes it a sort of permanent record which, I think, carries a more negative air of "If you fuck up, it'll follow you forever". If nothing else, it's the sort of cheap shot somebody might make at somebody in a heated argument.

I'm generally pretty satisfied with the moderation; on all but one occasion, I've completely agreed with the choice to ban a user if I'd had any interaction whatsoever with that user. On that one occasion, it seems like the problem was extremely long-term friction in the community and stuff, so I didn't really get the full picture of the problem. So while I can't agree with it completely, I also can't assert that it wasn't right. But seriously, the admins here are more lenient than I think you're giving them credit for. You generally don't get banned unless you're a spambot or causing serious problems in the community.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

You only get banned if you're a spambot or done some serious trolling or rule breaking. This has been true for as long as I've been registered. I can't say that I miss anyone who's been banned in that time period.

A few people opposed someones ban and got banned for it.

I can't remember their posts. So I can't remember if they're flamey.

Neup, they got banned because from Toady's perspective, they had been assisting Dasleah's "ban dodging" for an extended amount of time.

How could they have been assisting it?

Basically their friend got banned and they just couldn't let it go.
So they were banned. Too bad.

But now enough is enough and I'm tired to death of these frigging thread polluting the forum.
It's not that I like them being banned but they were and it's not such a big deal. Now stop it.

Yeah, his last post seemed to indicate he was done asking. Nothing to see here, folks, this tangent has been wrapped up.

Pretty much because A, only permabans are there forever, and B, because those mutes you see for 3 or 5 or a week of the like are this forum's equivalent of a temp ban.

Why would you expect to get banned for this thread? I doubt you'll even get warned for it. I think you've gotten a seriously wrong impression of the moderation here.
