Building miniforts on the magma sea is a nightmare - your metalworkers will eventually want to come out for one reason or another and then you'll get mass job spam. For example - when they eat a plump helmet and want to store the seed in the seed stockpile so instead of having a seed stockpile you have to have a seed stockpile that takes from the magma forge diner stockpile. If you get a metalsmith strange mood you're going to have to allow him up to the fortress cuse often enough he wont have what he needs, and so on and so forth. It's a pain, a huge pain.

Move the entire fortress down to the magma sea.

Yes that's the only way - currently having two separate forts is a logistical nightmare to actually do.

Not if you build the second fort to be totally self-sufficient, and then lever lock them apart. Bonus points if your airlock is filled with water when the lever closes them off.

Just put a burrow in the mini-fort, and assign all the furnace workers to it. Haulers will take the seed up etc. I've never had huge problems with this set-up.

Production at your magma-sea-level furnaces is going to grind to a halt without access to sand, so I wouldn't recommend sealing it off.  Turn glass-making on for a bunch of haulers or otherwise non-critical dorfs (who cares if they have to walk a long way for a drink if there are a dozen others waiting to take over?) and don't worry about the mini-fortress business.

A magma piston will not work if your talking the magma sea, as the piston obliterates on contact with a magma flow
