If I were to play Half-Life 2
« on: April 23, 2011, 05:57:55 pm »

Having never touched a Half-life game before, would I be missing out on much if I just started at 2? #1 is just a little too outdated for my tastes.

The first is nice for continuity, but not necessary. Go ahead and enjoy yourself. Hell, you can even go back to HL1 on a later date as a sort of 'prelude' and it'll work fine.

Story wise a little about some people and you would not get as close to some of the NPCs but gameplay alot for the gameplay in my opinion is what is best about the HL games.

Wait for black mesa to come out, then the story will be complete without worrying about outdated graphics.

Half life 3 will probably be out before then.

There's not an awful lot of story to be had in the first and furthermore a lot of it is obsolete since it's no longer the Xen creatures that are the major problem here (well, except the omnipresent Headcrabs but even they are just an annoyance).

Then again, you'll miss the gems of Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

Very little story actually happens in halflife 1 and what does happen is explained in the second, and what isn't explained in the second wasn't explained in the first. sooo...

Yeah your not missing pretty much anything other then a few rather forgettable inside jokes.

Heck if anything if you care about halflife 1... it makes the second worse as they continuously spit and barf on the first.

If you play Half Life 2 before HL1 you'll just get the impression that you've been gone for a long time, and in the time you've been gone the apocalypse has happened, which is mostly correct. Episode 1 and 2 elaborate on the storyline a little further, explaining the remaining cities of the world are kind of like fortresses keeping out large, horrible, extradimensional aliens. The only thing HL1 will explain is WHY Gordon Freeman is such an important character and known by everyone on the face of the Earth probably.

Just the other day I ended up looking around the Half-life Wiki because of a little Half-life related easter-egg in Portal 2. I clicked the page in question, read it, clicked another related page and so on. I realized, having played Half-life 1 twice, Half-life 2 and each episode two+ times, that I wasn't really paying attention. There's actually a decent amount of stuff going on in the universe, and being an Action Game, these things aren't really explained to you very well.

That being said, skip HL 1 unless you are actually interested in it. The game is wonderful, but plot-wise you can skip it entirely and not miss a beat. I do suggest taking a look at the wiki there after you're done with HL2, and get some more background on what's going on.
