So I made this shack here and I have the 50 silver coin requirement for a merchant, but one has yet to move in. Is the guide taking up the shack?

And do npcs occupy multiple story buildings? If they don't the Guide probably IS taking up the shack.

Make the shack bigger. From what I've read, the NPCs can be a little finicky about required height and width. NPCs move into multi-story buildings just fine, providing the rooms can support them.

Re-iterating, because it can pretty much always stand re-iteration. The maps are freaking huge. The biomes, which make up significant fractions of the maps, are sized accordingly. It's hard to really get a feel for how gigantic these maps are from just watching someone play, or seeing the screenshots. The amount that a single screen shows, in respect to the whole map, is terribly small. You don't really get a feel for the size until you watch someone tunnel nonstop for 15-20 minutes and not breach into another layer of the map. Even the small worlds are sized for multiplayer. They're made to support 4+ people.

And normally, you'd get sick of the repetition in a lot of games like this. But Terraria makes getting around challenging and fun, and therefore completely random amounts of that, mixed in with a crap ton of content that just builds on itself as the game goes on.

But yeah. I told my friend when he just started digging into the side of a hill "Don't bother with that. The odds of you digging for 20 minutes without hitting anything significant are great." I'm still getting lost in my cave system that leads down into Hell.

I think I have pretty much the ideal setup for ground protection. Unfortunately, I can't seem to print screen off Terraria. Every time I do and paste it into GIMP, I get a gray image. There are definitely some funky things going on with Terraria as a program. It interacts with a ton of stuff differently than most games.

Do the NPC homes HAVE to have a door?
For example if the only entrance/exit is by jumping.

Suit yourself.

A BLOO BLOO NOBODY WILL MOVE INTO MY HOUSES

MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE THIS:

WHY AREN'T YOU MAKING THEM LOOK LIKE THAT ANYWAY?

THINGS YOU NEED FOR A HOUSE:
1. A door.
2. Enough light.
3. A chair and table.
4. Ceiling at least 4 tiles high (maybe).
5. NO PLATFORMS.
YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE ALL OF THESE THINGS, NO OTHER THINGS ARE REQUIRED.

HOUSE TIPS:
1. Put your rooms above or below ground level so your residents don't wander off.
2. Put all your workshops in one place for convenience.
3. Make your house one square above the ground outside it so zombies can't bust the door in on Blood Moon.

Ok apparently you need just enough head room in the home so that you can jump on the table and your head reaches the ceiling  width doesn't seem to matter as long as you can fit the chair and table in.

Don't see the dyrad in there, so apparently no little old lady. Though... not really that little. Everyone in Terraria is 6 foot tall (counting the hair). Still, 500 counts as old, right? That's five centuries. Lady's doing alright for a quintuple centenarian.

On comparing, I guess I have 2 above the door as well on all rooms. When there was a delay, I just made an addition, usually about the same size, and they showed up immediately afterward. You also have to be away from your base for them to spawn.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As for defense....I find that a little overhang right at the limit of your jump stops about 50% of the ground guys from ever getting inside.
