They are different., Terraria has more of a action focus and Minecraft more of a building/engineering one. IMHO.

Minecraft uses obtuse amounts of building to create psuedo-gameplay, while Terraria actually has gameplay. Thats not entirely one-sided though; looking at it purely as a sandbox, Terraria is not as well put together as Minecraft.

So you get your choice:

Minecraft: Epic Sandbox (+5!), Weak Gameplay (+2!) = +7!

Terraria: Decent Sandbox (+3!), Great Gameplay (+4!) = +7!

They are both amazing games, so I can't really rate one over the other.

So is it hard? It looks like a really fun game, but I don't play many games apart from old console games and wii, so i'm not that great at these things.

Hard? Naw, its not too hard. If you take it slow and gear yourself up as you descend further and further, its easily manageable. That's not too say its not challenging; it certainly is.

Some people seem to love building stuff just for the sake of building stuff, and the problem-solving associated with figuring out how to build stuff.

I love being presented with problems that motivate me to build stuff, and the problem-solving associated with figuring out what/how to build something that will best solve the problem.  I also love the challenge of performing under pressure.

This is why I kept playing Dwarf Fortress when all my friends were playing Minecraft, and why I'm so interested in Terraria.

Is it more challenging then megaman? I tried playing that, and I couldn't beat a single boss. I beat super mario 3 so is that good enough?

Yes, it will be out monday. With a little help from google, you could probably download an illegal version right now, but it would be kind of complicated to set up. The illegal version takes a lot of other downloads before it will actually run. I would wait until monday.

I don't want to get a load of pirating and cracking stuff. It might mess up my computer. Monday isn't far away to wait.

Eh, my version wanted me to install the entire XNA studio, so I had to download Visual C# Express as well.
