NPCs:

To get Merchant, ye need 40 coins of pure silver.
To get Demo-man, you need to use a dynamite.
To get Arms Dealer, get a musket or some other firearm from smashing a Sorb.
To get Nurse, increase yer max life,
Aaand to get a Dryad, kill a boss.

All of them need an enclosed, background-walled room with at least one door, one table, one chair, and one internal source of light.

And how may I set something to be a background wall? Do I need to craft a "background" tile of some sort, or can anything be set as a background tile with some obscure command?

you need to craft the background wall at the crafting table. Background walls need to be removed (like any nonblock stuff except torches/candles/etc) with a hammer.

I think it's 50 silver for a merchant.

And there are probably some more requirements, because my town has quite a few empty rooms (two on the first/third floors of the brick building, one extra obsidian tower, plus the little shack next to the dryad), and I've used two dynamites, but I don't get the demolitionist. I'll try to find and use one more now that I have all kinds of free room. Also, the merchant definitely needs a second-floor apartment.

Ninja edit: Rex_Nex, most "foreground" tiles can be crafted into "background" tiles (at a 1-to-4 rate), using a workbench. Stone and clay (and some more stones) can be made into bricks using a furnace.

Mine lives just fine in his own house.  Thinking about making a large fort though.

One question, if I dismantle an already owned home, and build another, will they relocate or what?

Luckily I'm playing a weekend marathon of Shogun 2 with a friend, with Terraria coming out at the end of it. This could be the start of a great week. Seems kind of silly that people can't wait those 3-4 extra days for the real deal, but I guess there isn't much harm in it (hopefully).

I built a long, wide, one story house with small rooms separated - they MUST have their own doors not shared with another. I have had problems when my floors were a bit too short on the vertical, where alternating floors wouldn't work. It's very finnicky on spacing it seems.

The way I see it, people who won't pay for the game probably wouldn't have payed for it anyway.  Most of those who would have still will.  Those who weren't sure get to make an informed decision.

Anybody tried any pvp?

Alright bros, when this goes live on Monday we gotta work together on something, and I believe I have our project.

We journey to the side of a map where there is an edge ocean and set up camp there. Under the ocean a little ways we shall begin making a tunnel down to the Hell layer. Let's see how those skeleworm pricks like being flooded with an ocean of water.

That sounds cool. Of course the tunnel entrance has to be under water.

I mean, we would keep the tunnel dry as we work and just knock out the sand keeping the ocean up when done. We wouldn't dig it all out submerged.

 That would just be silly.

Perhaps interesting, though. Shouldn't be terribly difficult to make air pockets on the fly, and the amount of deaths involved in inattention would make it properly dwarfy...

Anyway, finally noticed someone with a depth meter on a floating island. Seems they're ~350 feet up. Maybe between 300 and 400.

E:Continued observation shows you can easily convert the little temple thing into a house for someone. Awesome.

Fuck. Devourers. Seriously.

You spend 20 minutes trying to kill one, then two more show up. I've watched them literally spin mid air in circles, creating little balls of death. Fucking A. I've died 4 times trying to find a DA in corruption just because I swarmed by those fucking things.

I thought this was the gliched one with no falling stars! I wanna use my rocket boots like a boss!

EDIT: Ok guys, dwarf question time! You want to fight the eye of cthulhu and know that it can go below the ground where you can't touch it, then come up and ambush you. What do you do?
