Anyone still paying attention know if there's going to be a non-steam option for purchase? Don't have anything non-personal against steam (it craps on my computer, mostly), but I'd really rather the money I spend on the game go directly and fully to the devs, yanno?

That and steam an' my comp's never really gotten along well, bleh.

BOOYAH

I have to admit, I'm happy for me, Steam, the Terraria devs and happy that the vocal minority wearing cat ears and freaking out about Steam now must deal.

Anyone want to bet me there won't be a TF2 hat tie-in?
Thankee.

Also, woot! Steam is one of the few things that will let me spend mah moniez from Paypal.

God dam it! This might be the straw that made me get a steam account.

I'd much rather get it off Steam, did they say anything about that?

Off steam as in, from someone else other than Steam? Sorry, it just read both ways.

No, on that. No news of alternate download sources, or whether Terraria will be exclusive to Steam. I don't really remember what Valve's general marketing goals are there, but I don't recall them being all "no u can't sell it anywhere but Steam."

Steam isn't bad, if you're not one of the magical people it hates or a total PC shut in that is using a system from 10 years ago. Once you accept it as a background application for staying in touch with your friends, it's decent.

I don't use applications made for keeping in touch with friends for keeping in touch with friends! You know what I hate about the Xbox? The little 'achievement unlocked' messages. Because of them, when ever possible I jump to PS3 or PC. I detest those messages! So who would I want something similar on my computer?

You're complaining about something that has no impact on gameplay and takes up a quarter of your screen for 3 seconds?

Because of Steam, I don't have to call people to see what they're doing half the time. They're either online on their PC doing something, away and offline or they're playing something I could get into. I get to see great deals pretty much once a week, if I feel like buying. You can basically get your own simple forum if you so desire.

Did I ever need Steam? No. Has it brought perks to the table I actually use and enjoy? Yes.

I'm not sure why I'm trying to convince you though, you're either going to try it or sweat in your tinfoil hat. My objection to other services is that I've got too many of them now, so I want games to go with the one I've invested my dollars in.

Yea, I am. I am allowed to not like features, especially when you can not turn them off. Hell, when I'm trapped at the bottom of an ice chasem, with monsters closing in, eyeing off my last tasty heart, and isolation begins to set in, I don't want "ub3rhax0r has just signed in". Good game devs work hard to build a specific atmosphere, and it only takes a second to shatter that.
I'm not sure why I'm trying to convince you though, you're either going to try it or sweat in your tinfoil hat.

Taking recent events into account, more likely I'm going to try it, but that dosn't imply I am going to like it. Hell, I went in expecting to like achievements, and all they did was brutally piss me off.

Some people don't have a constant need to know the status of those around them. I don't know where my friends are or what they are doing right now. If I wanted to know, I would call them! I don't need constant status updates from them when ever they feel like playing a game.

*sigh*

New info released, discussion begins, whining follows soon after.

So hey, there's going to be a new trailer. The old one is, well... old, and there's been a bunch of new shit added since then, so start furiously F5ing again:

We are planning on making a new trailer to showcase the game at its current stage, since the old trailer (While epic) shows off too much of the old gameplay and sprites that are no longer in the game.
No ETA on the new trailer, but keep an eye out.

FWIW, I was just as anti-Steam. Then I got it, and it's not bad. I didn't need to know what people were doing online either, but now that I can know just by popping up a Steam window, it's pretty handy.

You can just be a closet Steam user and not make any friends and set your shit to offline and whatever. Really, people's objections to Steam's intrusiveness are mostly overblown. Be online to purchase and activate, go offline. Only a few select games require you to be online to play them. Hell, Ubisoft's DRM is more intrusive by far.

People whining about Steam releases is as predictable as whining about traffic.

You know, if you're like me and you turn the overlay off, you don't get those pop up messages while in your game. Alas, you don't get steam achievements either if the game doesn't have a direct link to steam built in, such as Borderlands or Red Faction Guerrilla for example.

I only have a few problems with steam, but you can sort of deal with them.

1. Bad programming. A lot of things steam does, simply sucks and bugs out. Such as one minute long lockups every other minute when updating/downloading/installing games. Audio channels being held open in certain conditions. The ETA and download speed display is pretty useless as it's plain wrong. No download speed management. And so on.
2. The one thing it's supposed to do, it doesn't do well: Download games.
3. Preparing to run your game, why the fuck would you download 3-5mb just so I can play a single player game that has no updates?
4. It's DRM. No resale, no gifting after use, no refund if you get vac-fucked for some reason.
5. Horrible support.

So basically, if you have a decent internet and don't mind putting up with random crap now and then, steam works alright, proven by the fact I have several dozen games in it and I will still want Terraria.

You can shut those little pop ups off.

Without turning it into a DRM discussion, this is why I gave my account to my little brother  ::) I just got too frustrated with it.

I'm personally hoping for a non-steam release too.
