Fun fact: The game is ready to be shipped now, they just working on supporting features like making sure it can't be pirated. If people weren't jerks who illegally download games, we could all be playing it right now. Just think about that one...

I have every intention to pay full price for this game. It looks good, and I would like to support the people that developed it. Having it cracked would make me unhappy, because it would mean many people could easily steal from a hard working dev team.

Didn't seem to affect Minecraft too much, considering you can play the full-version client offline.  I'm sure there are pirated versions out there that activate without even asking for a login and just can't interface with the main server, but Notch still made a couple million dollars, and it certainly looks like the vast majority of people playing Minecraft paid for it.

IT'S THE PRINCIPLE OF THE MATTER DAM IT!

I would like to be able to make nice games one day (Why I am playing around with xna right now) and I wouldn't want people pirating my hard work, as such if I can't afford a game, I don't play it.

IIRC, they're working mostly on making it more user-friendly with servers and admin options and stuff. I doubt they're spending a ton of time on DRM; the distributor probably has that for them, they like that kind of thing.

It's moot anyway, though. All DRM can be cracked, because the game has to be played eventually, and it only has to be cracked once to be freely torrented.

*rollseyes*

The game isn't ready to be shipped because there are about 150 different legal hurdles that they weren't prepared for. Anti-piracy? Puhlease. It isn't ready to be shipped because they're working with a distributor instead of putting it up on their webspace behind a credit card page.

I sincerely hope that didn't come from the mouth of Blue, because it's like listening to a big name publisher cluck about piracy. The Terraria team is tiny. They should know better. And if they get too big for their britches, I'm pretty sure they'll feel it in the pocket book later. Pointless DRM or not. Terraria isn't a big game. It won't take that long to find and hack out whatever measures they put in.

If you honestly want to make games one day, prepare yourself for one simple truth: you can't stop them and you're wasting money and legit customer's patience by trying, when your shit goes wrong. For everyone hour you spend of your free-time trying to stop them, another guy will spend two to undo your work.

Information can't be stopped, it wants to be free! In case of software, it wants to be "free" in all senses of the word.

Seriously though, it's nigh impossible to make a game unpirateable. Even MMOs aren't completely immune. The only defense is a good offense, in this case - you can only make the game so good that whoever pirates it ends up buying it. Anything else is a temporary measure at most.

You're looking at piracy the wrong way. Don't think of it as "lost sale". Think of it as "free publicity". It's guaranteed that everyone who pirates it found it interesting enough to press "download", but it's not even close to guaranteed that everyone who pirates it would've bought it. If you have a large amount of people pirating it, that's indicative of another problem, such as a price that's set too high.

Yeah... the T-team has been pretty chill about the whole leak thing. It doesn't really seem to have had any effect on the time frame, other than a bit of an afternoon put aside to disrupt someone's schedule. Nothing major.

As for Terraria being pirated in general, I'd be fairly confident in saying they're probably resigned to it -- Blue's responses re: Modding showed they're pretty aware that the game's going to get hacked into little pieces in due time. Whether that means they won't bother with more than token effort to implement DRM type stuff, I couldn't say.

As for pirating in general, it tends to boil down to a strict numbers game. Doesn't really matter how much any particular company or team puts into stopping it from happening, the internet just has more people and more time to spew at it than pretty much any other entity around. Anything and everything will be hacked and shared, sooner or later. Most DRM I've seen is more about making it "later" than not at all, to get the initial sales glut.

In any case, most of the folks I've seen admit to nabbing up the leaked version have also openly stated they're buying a copy as well -- some of them multiple copies. I don't think it's going to hurt Terraria much, if at all.

As for your dev dreams, White, better idea is to make something so awesome people will pay you for making it even after pirating it, rather than trying to stop them from pirating it :P The former gets you money, the latter just wastes your time and goads the ones that do it as a challenge. The principle's more than a little off, there, but it's the reality of the digital age we're all, even if we don't realize it, really hoping comes about. It's better than the most likely alternative :-\
