In the end it doesn't really matter probably. Once the conditions for NPCs are met, they'll respawn if they die. I don't know if that includes the guide, but it probably does.
If he respawns in a room constntly filled with lava, then he will die as soon as he respawns.

Personally I think it would be better if your first room is ~40 tiles above the ground, then after you build it destory the support so he is stuck up there forever, and you won't even see him unless you build up.

Iirc, the stated requirements for an inhabitable room is "back wall, table, chair, light, door that opens both ways." Which may mean you can make a little L tetris-shape coming off the entrance block above the door, fulfill all the requirements, and have a <smallest room possible> brick stuck and blocked off out in the middle of nowhere. Guide can't get out, nothing besides worm-types and certain projectiles can in, everyone's happy! Except the guide. Stuck in a room. Maybe at the bottom of the ocean or something, I'unno. Glass walls sounds like a good idea, so he can look out and see the world passing by. Maybe they'll be fish by release day, so he can have living things taunting him.

I have been overhyped for terraria.  A couple days ago I drew up this.  Who needs a town when you can build a FORTRESS!

Yes I know, stuff is not to scale, and my chances of finding enough flat terrain to actually build this are slim to none, but I can't help myself!  HELP ME!

(P.S. Yes that underground room is for the guide, watching the lets play made me immediately think "I need to design a room that prevents him from letting slimes in")

Well yea, I suppose this is the Dwarf Fortress forums.  If a mountain is in the way, move the mountain.

I don't think you can build rooms underground (because underground has a background that stops you from building a wall there, so it doesn't count as a room and stuff can spawn there).

I don't think you can build rooms underground (because underground has a background that stops you from building a wall there, so it doesn't count as a room and stuff can spawn there).
I think you can tear the background walls down with a hammer, if you start from the top.
I could be mistaken.

Blue mentioned you'll be able to make underground rooms, if just for the sake of having a huge tower stretching from the pits of hell to the limits of the sky.
