Well I mean, you can lay down some wood walls and consider it a home. Can you lay down background walls and keep it safe from spawns?

And to go with my "Deep underground has no background layer" theory, perhaps they could allow torches on the background layer and sometimes have caves have a rock or dirt background layer you could place torches on if you wanted.

'Home' has a specific meaning in Terraria.  It means an NPC can move in, and while it's never been stated it was implied that NPCs only move into spawn proof rooms.  Pretty sure in one of PBat's videos he was hitting the background of Hell with a hammer on accident.

You may have to drag a "line" without a background from the surface, as in dungeons.

Big ol' Q&A posted from IRC. Not copy/pasting it as it would muck up the formatting.

http://terrariaonline.com/threads/tiys-q-a-session-18-37-gmt-1-6may-irc.1930/

Nothing earth shattering, but more answers are always good. They imply a lot of content hasn't been covered in the LPs. I'm not sure how much they consider "a lot", but it feels like maybe they're overstating how much is in game at times. The Floating Islands, Goblin Invasions and UJ can't make up that much more of the game.

It's standard vague developer speak. Those guys aren't Blue, so, they're possibly not the best at answering questions directly.

They still haven't gotten around to answering the one real remaining question I have: are the controls going to be configurable. Games like Terraria (Super Meat Boy, ect....) seem to have this pathological aversion to anything but WASD and Space Bar. I _hate_ using the space bar to jump.

I don't think that was a formal Q&A and more just somebody browsing the IRC and compiling the answers the devs would give.

I don't think there's much of a formal Q&A going on over IRC. Blue and others just pop in occasionally and get assaulted by questions, and sometimes decide to sit down for a few minutes to answer some.

I tend to avoid IRC because when something does happen, there's 800 people responding to it.

Mm? Configurable controls was added a 'lil while ago. That bit on 'custom controls'. S'pretty obvious that means you can change 'em around.

Which is good. The spacebar on my plug-in keyboard is actually semi-broke, so it's annoying to use, and I prefer to have the lefthand doing whatever the righthand isn't for mouse/keyboard control systems -- so switching jump to w is a priority :P As is clustering all the important stuff over there, too. Crafting to q or `, inventory to e, etc, etc. I happen to hate using ctrl, alt, space, etc, as input buttons as well :-\

I often wonder what kind of deviant soul doesn't hate those as jump or attack buttons. I'm guessing  people with gamepads, maybe. Freaks :P

Added to what? Are you talking about Terraria or some other game? Cause I'm not seeing it mentioned in any of the FAQs.

Nah, that's a very old skool setup that some people just prefer.

To Terraria, yes. I forget exactly where, but it's from the mouth of devs. It's not in the faqs, but it was mentioned in passing in some kind of update... thing. Somewhere. I'll see if I can hunt it up. Bleh, no luck. It's either mentioned in passing in one of the LPs (I don't think so), or it was said by Blue as a "What's Redigit doing" thing in IRC, but not during any of the actual Q&A session type things. I'm terribly annoyed I can't find the actual message somewhere :-\

Though yeah, re: Oldschool, I remember that well. I also remember how mindbogglingly impressed I was by the japanese -- at least, that was the folks that first put out a game I played with th'layout -- usage of zxc or asd. Terribly much easier on my poor hands, it is, and less likely to hit some arcane key combination that makes the system do something funny.

EDIT: Found this much:

@DerpDerp
"And so would the ability to bind buttons on the hotbar to new keys, but I think that was mentioned somewhere in this thread. And probably by a trillion others. "

Redigit has stated his own desire to allow controls to be customized eventually. Again, through a content update most likely.

Well let me know when you find it. Other than what's not posted from IRC, I don't miss much of the info.

Ah, you're probably right. Tiy is only [one of?] the artist(s) at that, but, still!

I do recall them thanking Red Yoshi, the guy who did the graphic Super Mario X, as well as some other projects.
