Well Dungeon Keeper came before DF. Anybody know if Toady has cited it as an inspiration?

Then again, DK didn't have the tear down blocks and place them else were thing going on even nearly as much. Oh how games evolve when they take inspiration from each other...

I stumbled upon this thread two days ago, and have just now finished the developer's and PBat's Let's Plays.
Dear Gog I want to play this. So much.

In DF, only very recently we got the ability to use stone to build walls and even so, most people just dig their fortresses instead. I think DF would be more of an inspiration for mining and crafting (Oh the irony) as far as these games go.

I think the best inspiration DF has to offer is indirect control. It's pleasant to see your dorfs doing (or not doing) your bidding.

Blocks that you can mine and place. The most famous source of inspiration for that right now is minecraft.
I'd cite an older example, but we don't need to go there :P
Course, you could easily say Lego. But as far as computer games go, you either get Minecraft or Infiniminer nowadays and minecraft is by far the most famous of the two.
I would say Blockland, that is a game I've played in 2007 or 2008 and when I saw Minecraft for the first time, I thought that it's ripped off totally inspired by that game.

You mean the game previously didn't involve building stuff?
How ignorant can you be on the forum of the game you are talking about?

He's actually kind of right. In the past, you couldn't rebuild walls, meaning you were fucked if you dug the wrong spot out.

Well... You could, but you'd have to use hax. :p

November 2007 is "very recently"?  Heck, in terms of years, at this point the 2D Era accounts for a third to quarter of DF's history, and is rapidly fading into ancient legend.

Super Mario bros 3 is a most ancient and powerful artefact, remembered by few, from the far distant past.  :P

You know what's terrible about PBat's LPs? His bullcrap stream of consciousness talking and his constant saying of "we" when he fucks up.

Like he lost his grappling hook and he kept saying, "I don't know how WE lost our grappling hook." IT WAS YOU YOU IDIOT.

Hey, when I'm commentating on a game I use the term 'we' to refer to myself constantly. What I don't like about PBat is his wannabe ghetto attitude. "We all get it, you're black, move on."

I'd like to remind everyone that half of the time I don't even know what I'm talking about. The other half of the time I only sort of know what I'm talking about.

The we I don't mind. The ghetto wannabe? I can even handle that.

But the running into the same cave, dying the same way over and over, doing nothing new, not even trying out new features in favour of the same old song and dance? ARRRRRRRR! Why can he not do something interesting in a world full of interesting things?

Its a way of speaking. I do it too. Though I can't remember how 'correct' it is when it comes down to the technical manner...

"We all get it, you're black, move on."
Once you go black you can never go back. Not to mention that this isn't a 'black' way of speaking, not by a long shot. I'm getting more of a middle-class suburbs vibe from it. It's all a weird classification to take on it no matter what terms you use.

And I understand not having the ability to notice everything around him or make good decisions on the fly, as playing a game is infinitely different from watching a guy play a game. Things slip up, and it doesn't degrade the intelligence of the player.

The cave exploration segments were the most entertaining parts anyway.

To be fair falling stars were bugged and none would show up anyway. Caves are more interesting than wandering on the surface wondering why stars won't fall.
