To slightly digress to the subject of, well, the subject:

How about instead of "Minecraft + Metroid?" we just say 'Terraria... Looks like Happy!"

That seems to be the most appropriate thread title, considering that virtually everyone here wants to play this very very badly.

It is a salespitch and pretty good for first impressions. No need to change it to "looks like Happy" especially since that is very hypetastic.

Considering the only person that can easily change the OP (and thus the title) hasn't shown up since said OP, does someone want to send them a PM?

That's why I was thinking just making a new thread for release :P

OK. I lol'd at the gift Pbat got. From that bit of held breath, I bet he was expecting at least a flail, and then that huge dis from the fact every time he jumps he kills a newbie was win. He should have at least gotten on of the infinite underwater items, so he no longer has to watch his breath.

I don't think system requirements will hurt anyone at all. Probably a wild guess but I think anyone able to run minecraft should be able to run terraria without any problems. Considering this game seems ALOT less buggy and laggy then the current version of minecraft.

Terraria.... It's everyone's childhood in one tidy package!

The dev's themselves say they've borrowed from every genre and oh so many games from years past.

I found Blue's answers a little generic on that front. While yeah, you can say your inspiration comes from anywhere and point to any specific part of game play and its source, he basically dodged the question of "what inspired a digging, monster killing game with lots of crafting?" Mostly dodged the aesthetic style question too. Because the inspiration is pretty obvious to anyone that sees the games they loved in Terraria. I guess I would have appreciated a little more honesty there, but these guys are probably totally overwhelmed by their success at this point, and are walking on eggshells.

Honesty? I think it was a suitable answer, rather than him making referrals to various games for the inspiration which would have made a rather long answer.
It is also less similar to minecraft than minecraft is similar to infiniminer, If that is what you are implying.

I love how you group all those factors into one source. The crafting system is only like MC's in that you need something to craft on for most things, and you need materials for it. The fighting part definitely hails Castlevania more than MC. The only part I can't attribute to another game is the digging, but MC itself undeniably got that from infiniminer.

I was thinking more rattling off stuff like: Final Fantasy, Metroid, Dig Dug, Zelda....screw that whole MC debate, that's centric to who tweeted the game and the community that received it. I think that whole thing has made them gun shy about talking freely. I like it personally when developers talk directly about their inspirations, I go "Oh yeah, I played that game and thought X" and I feel connected to the ideas that show up in their game. "Oh we pull inspiration from everywhere" is a canned answer. In that respect I guess Blue is settling right into his job.

Maybe if we make a Bay12 server glorious enough we can have one of the devs visit us and our dwarf filled land of plenty.

Then we can get the real facts straight.
