Well, Minecraft is 3D, and Terraria is in 2D. Graphics would be harder with Minecraft, which explains the lack of features since it is probably more effort to make graphics for whatever new 3D shape.

That's all I got to say to this debacle. I hope it doesn't turn into a flame war. I admit, this may be poorly thought out, but this can start a discussion with smarter people then me.

Hmm... Probably minecraft grew into big thing that needs more and more time to fix bugs and maintain.
As for terraria - my first reaction is: how will it be modable ? :D (yeah i know probably not modable at all :/ )

Mainly, it's more a matter of memory management than anything else. Storing x,y,z coordinates, and a variety of possible states (on fire, not on fire, light intensity, powered, unpowered, etc,) is far more difficult than simply keeping track of the x,y position of a tile. As far as I can tell, some of the more complex features of Minecraft, such as redstone circuitry, are going to be absent from this, by necessity. I also haven't seen wood catch on fire.

To put it simply, the memory taken up by a Minecraft word expands cubically as it's volume increases, whereas in Terraria, it only expands in a square function as the area increases. This obviously leaves you play area large enough to explore, along with plenty of extra memory space to include extraneous objects.

As far as I could tell from watching the development cycle for nearly two years now, much of Minecraft's development was consumed by generating 3D worlds worth looking at, saving and loading infinite worlds without the program eating itself or blowing up the harddrive, and getting effects like lighting and explosions and tile interactions and monster AI to mostly function properly in a 3D environment.  Everything in Terraria is by definition exponentially simpler to achieve, not to mention there doesn't seem to be as many cell-to-cell interactions.

The 2nd LP guys has a fun Letsplay, and his videos are a lot longer than first LP.
I do wonder how you are supposed to build backgroundwalls underground because the default dirt walls that do not stop spawning unable the playr to build wooden ones. I guess you should use a hammer for that but it would be weird if you could just hammer away a cave and open it to the outside world.
But if you are unable to replace the dirt wall it would royally suck because I want my underground home :)

Actually they were on top of the house, however they definitely ripped off minecraft's pathfinding :P. So they cannot go around things.

And on that note, he returns to sounding douchey in Pt 2.

He's like a geeky gamer version of a guy from Jersey Shore.

"They have shurikens. That's so BALLAH."

Yes. I'm sure things in video games and being ballah are 1:1. Yutz.
