Deon turned up as soon as someone mentioned his name.

I'm scared.
Yeah, he kinda does that. You should see his art.

I'm actually pretty curious if the melee pvp will be skill or luck based. ...aside from that it will be heavily equipment based of course.
Seems equipment is rather standard in what it does with little in the way of deviations. If by luck based you mean in the relevance of Minecraft PvP where hitting your opponents is heavily dictated by latency then there isn't much gameplay design they can do about that: If you and your foe have high pings then it'll be very chaotic and luck-based. If you both have low pings then latency won't be as problematic. They even noted in the LP that the arrows were a little off because of latency, so shooting won't be exempt form this.

I was perfectly fine with the arc when I saw it, akin to the 2D Zelda games. It's a different perspective but I like it a lot better than a more rigid animation of them stabbing or something. The animation itself looks a little weird as using sprites alongside rotating sprites does, but not too much of a problem.

This looks like a game you need a walkthrough for, as it seems a lot of the equipment has weird ways of getting it. The hookshot needs an iron hook when you can't just forge with your iron, you need to get it as a Skeleton drop. Some armors require strange things like cobwebs and doom altars that are randomly generated and are hard to find/take up space only for that use. It's honestly something they can change later with no problems if it becomes an issue and I'm not gonna nitpick them on it right now. Nitpicking is kinda stupid in an early alpha build anyway.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Well the animation for attack is basically a lot like the hammer from Super Smash Bros. except the body doesn't move.

As for a walkthrough. Other then a few end game things, for the most part it is a "collect everything" sort of deal.

Though given you can't hold everything... yeah...

As for PVP, I fully expect that for the most part it will be ranged until people close in unless they bring in more weapon types with different attacks.

What do you mean luck-based? It looks like every time they hit something it does the same amount of damage (so no RNG there) and your arc is the same every time you swing with the same delay between swings each time (assuming you're spamming attacks).
IIRC, one of the two players in the LP (probably the one you can see the screen of) attacks some slimes and sometimes does 7 and sometimes 8 damage so there is a RNG but weapons seem to have a very small 'gap'. That might of course be different for more powerful weapons but the ones in the LP seem to have damage ranges like 4-4, 5-5, 7-8 /etc

It looks a lot better in the Castlevania game :P hillariously.

Especially since he is actually attacking and the arc isn't Super Smash Hammer :P

Though he is just one castlevania character. Most of them don't do that kind of arc (most attack straight on)

You sure it's not because of the slime? Slimes of different colors are different. Maybe the ones where you see 7 damage have some more armor.

Ohh we know different slimes have different armor. Some took much less then 7.

We also know the PCs bought armor during the game.

Yeah but I am thinking of the Sword of Alucard, The Whip, Claws, Staffs, Skeleton Bones, Orbs of magic, Throwing axes, holy water, Cross, Longsword of Alexander.

Though to admit they said that the graphics of Terraria are placeholders... so things will look quite different once it is done (and in the Trees case I am somewhat thankful)

The 7 damage hits and the 8 damage hits were against different slimes.

I know Neo. I was talking about Duchling's assessment of damage being slightly random. My assumption was because they were two different slimes, one taking 8 and the other 7.

I meant if its just about coming close to each other and see who falls first or its based on timing your attack or perhaps blocks of some sort... To be honest i didn't played any multiplayer sidescrollers with melee weapons yet so i lack a general feel for such combat.

Ah ok, that makes sense. It looks like the actual damage-dealing part of combat is really simple (just go smack them with your sword and they'll likely hit you back) but a few things will make it more interesting. When you hit something it gets knocked back (and I THINK player-characters are invulnerable for a split second too, I'd need to rewatch the video), so that'll keep both of you from just standing there and hitting each other until one of you dies. Also, of course, you can both change the terrain itself (either by mining or bombs) so you could always take advantage of that and knock them into a pit. Plus you can place blocks much more quickly than you can mine them (at least with lower level picks) so you could do some potentially interesting things with walling them or yourself into a corner. It doesn't look like there are any shields of any sort though, you just have to hit them before they hit you.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

I think that the major PvP will happen with ranged weapons (and magic) because arrows fly quite fast and it's hard to dodge them :).

There's no magic per se, and no "sci-fi" stuff either. You have what looks like a blaster pistol shooting Star Wars-ish laser beams, and what looks like a magic missile spell, but they're both artifacts that consume mana. There's no "direct" magic in the game, and all seemingly high-tech items are merely artifacts.

Also, it's my understanding that a lot of the things you see in the trailer are actually premade, but randomly allocated artifacts placed into the deeper levels. Kinda like some of the items in Spelunky. You could get teams of jetpack-riding, blaster-wielding characters to play on one server if you brought together characters that were made on other servers, but on a new server with clean characters, teams will race down into the dungeons (well, "race" is a wrong word here - they'll race each other into the dungeons, but the process itself will be slow, since starting chars won't survive long down there) to get items of power to defeat the other team with. At least, that's my vision of it.
