It's more like a magical crafting system, where some crafting recipies require mana. He said that in some internet interview thingie some guy posted earlier (or it was a reply to a YouTube comment; don't remember...)

This appears to be quite a lot better than minecraft in my opinion.
If they keep developing it, it might become an amazing game, almost seems like one already.

Maybe so, but there's also combat magic, look in the gameplay trailer, about 2:20 in.

There was something looking like a meteor swarm and one guy threw something blue that depleted his mana.

There are weapons and accessories that use mana. He was using some sort of magic wand.

This does look like it's better than Minecraft in the same way that Doom is better than Photoshop. It's more of a game sure, but they are entertaining for such wildly different reasons that I can't really say one is better overall with a straight face. When it comes to building a house/fortress/city, this can't hold a candle to Minecraft. When it comes to exploring monster-filled caves with various tools in a destroyable 2D platforming world this is better.

I dunno, all these remarks that this is better than Minecraft bug me in how inaccurate they are and how much disservice they grant.

Reminds me a great deal of Clonk but with better character controls. That I can dig.
Totally. I don't know why so many people say "2d minecraft", it looks more like "blocky Clonk" for me, with less wonky controls and great monster fights!

3D does a lot, but there seems to be more detail in Terraria. Cut the minecraft block in eight and you would be able to make awesome things there.

Haha that pretty much sums up my thoughts on it.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

imo Minecraft makes it very hard to create something nice AND small, while the basic house they build in the lets'play looks way better than most of the houses you seen in MC, except if you count the useless eye candy super fortress 'houses'.
You cannot really compare it of course, but imo building look way better in Terraria.

I want to make a castlevania style gothic town.  :)

I'll put a graveyard on each end to give a reason for the zombies.

I have to agree with you there Dutchling. I like the aesthetics of a Terraria house over Minecraft's any day. By the looks of it a big house in Terraria actually has a function besides storage like in minecraft. Besides the awesome sounding Merchant that will move in, the trailer also showed a nurse that moves in and heals you (for money more than likely).

Aside from that though, I'm wondering how exactly the maps are handled. I know they said it was some decent number of screens (100x50ish, I think, maybe 150x70? Not exact numbers of course) but I wonder what happens when you hit the 'edge' of the horizontal screen. Do you just stop scrolling or does it wrap back around on itself? I ask because I think it'd be pretty interesting to have the background show a blurry representation of something built on the 'opposite' side of the world... Though probably just more system intensive.

 I...What?

Merchants have been suggested for Minecraft and everybody seemed to agree that they didn't want NPC merchants.

And their shack doesn't look any better than a Minecraft shack. Just grab a 32x pack and they look identical.
