I like how the comparisons to Minecraft have just dropped off recently, because that was really annoying. It's clear now that the game is nothing like it and is really an adventure-y game that just happens to have block-based building in it.

I like how everyone gets crazy defensive when anyone mentions minecraft.

Whether you like it or not, it's hard to deny that it took inspiration from the game. I wouldn't be worried about that and no, I never said it was a flat out clone, I have seen the different things it's doing, but I also think that minecraft, if it ever gets finished (Yes, I'm slightly pissed that it's taking so long to move forward in THAT game when this one can get so far so fast) will be able to do most, if not all of the things present here.

I don't deny that 2d does change the gameplay mechanics and I'm willing to admit that some of them can be better, and can't be done as well or at all in 3d, however 3d does allow more freedom.

I do dislike how the developers are treating the game though, keeping it closed off and secretive*, (except to their goonish friends.) which makes me even less inclined to invest.

*Excepting videos.

And it is hard to deny that MC took inspiration from DF. IIRC Notch even said he took DF as an inspiration. They aren't the same game though. And while it would be nice to get a release out, it hasn't really been secretive. Hell, they are flaunting their stuff in the best way they can with trailers and lps.

As for 3d gives more freedom, why is that good? freedom implies doing what ever you want, and that means no restrictions, no challenge, no conflict. Just wandering around building stuff. Yes, you can be very creative in MC, and that is what it was built for, but MC and terraria are not the same game, and their goals are different.

How could you call the game closed off and secretive? An entire LP, and letting people post their OWN LPs is the most I've ever seen in game development except for DF and Minecraft, both of which are basically just open alpha/beta. I think it's fair that they want to finish the game before they let a flood of people onto it. Did you see Minecraft when it really got going? The server that Notch had couldn't handle anything like that. Terraria is getting a fraction of that amount, but it's right from the start, instead of semi-gradually like Minecraft.

Though I suppose having it all from the start is at least giving the devs some indication of what to expect.

The game has many sources of inspiration. People that aren't Minecraft goons see very little MC in it.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda, but doesn't. So why bother saying it? For all you're harping about people's defensiveness toward MC, you basically just walked in here and got all defensive about it.

It's completely standard for development. And exactly how secretive can you be with a game that's been known of for barely more than a week? Are people who announce 6 months before release being robo-secretive?

On an unrelated note, some guy on TerrariaOnline is already in their GD forum posting screenshots to his home brewed game that does shamelessly rip off Terraria. You gotta love how you can't succeed without having at least 4 people trying to hang on for the ride.

Blocks that you can mine and place. The most famous source of inspiration for that right now is minecraft.

It's not a bad thing.

I'd cite an older example, but we don't need to go there :P

It's like somebody saying that Starcraft does it better then Simcity, because there are opponents and you can see individual units. And they are both he same game because you build settlements in both games.

Point and case?
It's like somebody saying that MC does it better then terraria, because it is 3d and you can build anything anywhere. And they are both he same game because you harvest and place blocks in both games.

And Minecraft got that idea directly from Infiniminer (I'd say that Minecraft has far more of an Infiniminer influence than a DF influence).  I would agree with those posting earlier that what we are seeing is the birth of a new genre or genre elements.

For the longest time, whenever I hear people talk about what game features that they want to see, destructible environments come up.  I am glad for the genre's proliferation, as I think that each of the games fills a different niche.

For example, while Minecraft may be a great mining and building game, it has some very questionable elements.  For example, rails and TNT are expensive to produce.  This means that while these are very fun ways of influencing the game environment, the player almost never uses them without inventory hacking.  Notch, when he does update, never focuses on the "survival" aspect of the game, and SMP is still too buggy to deliver a reliable co-op/PVP experience.

From what I've seen of the LP's, Terraria's minetroidvania has different goals for the destructible environment mechanics.  I would compare it to how Ace of Spades reapplied the mechanic to add fort/trench/tunnel mechanics to an FPS.

I'm certain now that when I finish Earthsage, it will be considered a "Terraria Clone", even though the concept emerged before I had even heard of Minecraft or Infiniminer. Sure, it's inspired by other games, but I couldn't exactly pin down how or where. In other words, there are lots of games that share the same concepts because they're good concepts, not because they're inspired or "ripped" off of each other. Keep that in mind when you compare any sort of work, not just games - originality is very difficult to balance with composition/'polish', and both are important.

And really, aren't roguelikes so much a rip off of rogue that the genera was named after that game? Yet they are not just blatant rip offs, they just take some ideas and concepts, and use them with what ever else they can to bring something new to the table. Dwarf Fortress, Elona and Stone Soup are all roguelikes, but very different games from each other, and even rogue itself.

Course, you could easily say Lego. But as far as computer games go, you either get Minecraft or Infiniminer nowadays and minecraft is by far the most famous of the two.

No, I was going to say that DF predates them all. But since it doesn't get sold for money, I guess it doesn't get consideration?
