Like, why are they being done so well, or why are they seemingly getting people more excited?

I think they're just tapping into gameplay without all the multimillion dollar hoopla. That shit sells nowadays, if it's priced right. You know, all those older elitist gamers with disposable income who still like 16-bit graphics and such. :P

Because Indie games are the only ones really innovating anymore.  Games are becoming like movies.  When millions of dollars are on the line doing anything new is foolhardy.  Indie games aren't as costly and are usually labors of love so we get to see really fancy stuff come out of it.

That being said, that doesn't mean indie games are some magical force of originality and innovation in a sea of Call of Gears of Honor Assault Recon 4: Modern Halo.  For every Terraria there are ten or eleven Tower Defense/DotA/Minecraft Clones/and pretentious "art" games, and games so bad their asking for money comes off as insulting (I'm talking about you, Fort Zombie)

Yeah. There's a market for people who value gameplay/open-endedness > pizazz, or at any rate value it as much as pizazz. Pizazz also has a market. It's fun to play awesome-looking games on huge flatscreens with a home theater system, etc. Then again, it's also great to have solid, replayable games that you can play anywhere regardless of how good (or awful) the graphics are and still have fun. And people will pay for it.

The free market is a very cool thing.

Plus I think it's the tech. It's getting easier and easier for people to make these kinds of games (and by contrast, probably more expensive to license the tech necessary to create the "other" kind of games.) So people can "easily" produce stuff that appeals to people like us, and actually turn a modest profit. I don't think there was the variety or ease of access to development tools 10 or 15 years ago like there is today. I don't know what the game is built on, but I kind of doubt it's a hand-crafted engine with handcrafted graphics handling and all that shiz, that eats up a year of development and $400,000 like it does with major dev houses.

This looks nice, despite looking like Notch made a 2D version of Minecraft with more combat and Gold-Shop-like weapons and armour.
Also c'mon lots of people say "blabla you fanboy everything looks like minecraft to you" but look at the hearts. God, look at the BUBBLES!

But I like it, and from what've seen on the trailer you can even place NPCs? (notice when he 'builds the world' and then some shopkeeper suddenly appears in a room and a shop interface appears).
It seems nice. And while I can't stand digging enough iron for my ridiculously weird projects in Minecraft (yep I only play vanilla, normal, without cheats and without patience), this looks fast-paced enough for my impatient being.

2) I am big on letting the player see the weapons and armor they are using. The goal here was to keep things simple so it would be easier to add items later down the road. There will be a lot more hairstyles to chose from, but your overall look will come mostly from the gear you are wearing. I don't have any plans right now for custom player graphics.

Well that's a shame.  Not that he's ruling anything out obviously.

Oh fuck a game that uses bubbles to represent breath and hearts to represent life? That hasn't been done for at least a dec-
 Oh, wait, ooohhhhhh.

I think people are just getting attached to the low-res pixel art being used properly. Notch had 16x16 tiles, they looked fantastic. These guys have SquareEnix style sprites, good work there. There are some other graphical similarities here, but again this has far more in common with Clonk Rage than Minecraft.

Note that custom graphics were ruled out in the context of player skins others can see. In the context of editing the graphics for your client who the heck knows. They don't have a view on modding at the moment as they just want the game to work, so who knows what will happen.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

That's true but I still think it looks like Minecraft went 2D. Also I'm laughing so I'm not arguing or anything.
I think the game will be really fun, and I don't really care it looks like other games etc.
But I hope there aren't green, phallic monsters that blow up when they get near you, and drop gunpowder when killed... heheh

ZOMG NOT STEALING NOTCHS PRECIOUS ORIGINAL HEARTS AND BUBBLES DESIGN.

But seriously, while there are definite direct connections to MC, they're doing a lot of original stuff as well - love the burrowing Worms

Which, you know, are a staple of older 2d platforming games.

Again, having not played MC, when I saw it I immediately thought of all the old NES games I love. Zelda, FF, Square-Anything. Is there just a chance that's what they were going for, and not because MC did it? I think there's at least some, about as much chance that's what Notch was going for when he decided hearts and bubbles ruled.

With this being a lower end development deal, I'm not surprised they're non-committal to modding or anything else.

And give me part 7, 8 and 9, dagnabit. Part 6 was them getting sandwiched between 10 zombies for 8 minutes :P

Yeah, it's got a catchy, slogan like quality to it. Like an LCS slogan.

"Hearts and Bubbles, bitches!"

Yeah. I would bet real cash that Notch, the great infallible being that he is, ripped them from something NES era.

The recent topic bump reminded me that this is much closer to Diggles than just about anything else.
