Well they said it comes in different sizes, but if it is too small, why not gen a new map?

Not sure what you mean like map expansion. Those things are built once and exist. You'd have to repackage all the data, add a chunk then build it all again. Not feasible.

I think he means like MineCraft, or the abyss from StoneSoup, where you can go forever.

EDIT:
So, as the current player sprite that we have seen is just a palette swap of bartz from FFV, what are the chances of new character sprites?

[17:56] <Tiy> Difficult to give a percentage, but I've been working night and day for a fair while now to get as much crammed in as I can. All the NPCs, player sprites, armors, and a lot more have been replaced

Tiy's one of the graphics folks working on the game. All the sprites mentioned up there are different from anything we've seen in the LPs, apparently. So, uh, chances are pretty high. Approaching 1, really.

Sometimes, I'd rather keep the world in which I've built a hell tower, but not run out of meteorite.

Also, think about how quickly worlds would become devoid of minerals in multiplayer.

Well I guess in multiplayer you would be driven underground. We saw a few awesome mineral veins that have just been ignored because the player had better gear already.

But that was with either only 1 or 2 people. Imagine that with 7 or 8 getting on and off. Stripmined maps go.

I guess... Still, if they allow you to transfer items between games like we have seen so far, I don't think it matters.

EDIT:
Come to think of it... Funny if the new sprites were a mario pallet swap.

Stripmined small maps... maybe. The medium, perhaps, but doubtful. The large large+ ones? Those things are freaking huge. Even with 7-8 people, it's going to take a lot of effort to actually strip a world of resources.

Now, 20-30 folks? That wouldn't take long. But half to a third, or less... it's going to take some time. Anything'll strip-minable given enough time, regardless of numbers, but there's quite a lot of space to expand and exploit.

Even if you manage to strip a world of resources making a 1/1 scale model of Midgar, couldn't you just create a new world, bring your guy into that world, create a small outpost, collect the resources you need and then load the character back into your barren hollow wasteland of a world with resources in inventory?

That would be fine on a single player server. But what's to stop a griefer from farming his single player world and get an inventory full of bombs and tnt? You either get worlds with no resources or worlds where grief runs amok.

Meh, they could have a control for mineral scarcity. Although I'm not a huge fan of that because everybody will always set it to high always, but what ever.

It doesn't matter how MUCH there is, the fact should you run out you can't get more is the problem.

Coming late to the thread...

When I first saw the trailers, my first impression was that it reminded me of Maple Story.  Although that might be a far graver insult than calling it a Minecraft ripoff....

Regardless of what Notch may have intended, I suspect the hostile reaction among certain of his fans has only boosted Terraria's popularity.  I first heard of it through one such angry remark in the comments page for a LPer I watch.

I suspect Minecraft fans are touchy because MC is a bit weak within the genre it created.  Given the following three programming challenges:
  • Create a game that is to Minecraft what Nethack is to Rogue
  • Create a game that is to Dwarf Fortress what Nethack is to Rogue
  • Create a game that is to Terraria what Nethack is to Rogue
Challenge 1 would be by far the easiest, IMHO.

One other note I haven't seen a comment on: one key aspect of Terraria's surface brilliance is the font it uses.  I wonder what it is -- it can't be Comic Sans or Tekton, as those don't have a backwards-slanted capital S.

Might have been custom built. The font certainly adds to the charm, but doesn't really standout to me. I'm all about the serifs though.
