So I've found my very first demon nobleman
« on: April 23, 2011, 10:14:01 am »

The Law-Giver at the capital of my starting civ just happened to be a giant demonic possum made out of charcoal, who apparently has been chillin' with its human homies ever since Year 8 without anyone noticing.

So naturally my long term goal is to find out whether a nation still gets pissy at you for commiting murder when the dude in question is actually a demon :)

You'll still get punished for committing crimes in demon county, they don't have laws for nothing ya know. Interestingly enough, not all the demon rulers are bloodthirsty, warmongering brutes; the first one I encountered, for instance, was a strangely serene bat demon named ̉nale, and she was associated with youth and longevity. Demons seem more likely to rule humans when they're associated with good things, possibly because it's something they have in common with the god they're impersonating.

Ah, yes, I thought something was amiss. Now I see. There's not enough terrible things in the lakes.

The demon I've found has convinced the locals it's a manifestation of their death goddess. Even though the demon is a giant char-grilled marsupial without a face and their death goddess is a beautiful young woman. SO I dunno about being associated with nice things there :)

Avatars, man. It's all about avatars.

The demon I've found has convinced the locals it's a manifestation of their death goddess.
The key word is "manifestation". Gods cannot appear in DF world, but demons may pretend that they are a deity in its earthly form.

The law-giver of the human civ I am questing for is a demon.
"A great skinless gecko twisted into humanoid form. It knows and intones the names of all it encounters. Beware its deadly dust!"
I'm hoping he can be recruited, although he is quite creepy. He also just gave me a quest to kill a GCS.

I dunno, can you eventually recruit nobles? Every game I've ran in adventure mode tends to end badly after a couple of megabeasts because I get sloppy and end up being ambushed at night with an understrength party, so I've never built up a truly insanely awesome rep.

I don't believe you can ever recruit nobles, but sometimes nobles get kicked out of the nobility I think. Not sure how likely that is to happen within reasonable adventure mode game time though.

To avoid ambushes while sleeping during long-distance travel... I've started following a policy of ALWAYS sleeping in lairs/shrines/labyrinths. I hop between them and if one I want to use is occupied I kill it's resident(s) and have a good night sleep. Even if you're legendary at everything and have 20 guys with you you can still get pwnd in your sleep by goblins, but they can't ambush you in a lair. If you're too weak to kill less than 90% of lair residents then I'd say just avoid long-distance travel until you're not.

To avoid dying to ambushes while sleeping or during long-distance travel... I travel with a full compliment of meat shields to soak up the damage and then slaughter all the ambushers.

I sleep on the mountains. Honestly, i've come to prefer them over the lairs, and even the towns.

Just make sure to get to the mountain BEFORE the night creatures ambush you. They won't ambush on a mountain, but they'll follow you there if they did already.

Hmm.... I didn't know that mountains protected you from ambush. Maybe they get treated like a "site" since you can't walk over them in fast travel....

Even with max meat shields ambushes have caused me problems. Seems like ambush parties always increase in number to match the size of your group. Might not be a problem for the first ambush, but when it happens like 3 nights in a row the meat shields tend to get depleted.
