I found something called <evolution heart> for sale in the festival (super expensive). Seems these are the items for evolving your pets... too bad I already used all my money on a pair of stairs.

In the xmas version, dying in the tutorial would corrupt the world map, forcing you to delete the character. Does that count for anything?

The only advice I can give you is: do escort missions until you are wealthy, then buy gear from travelling merchants, who sell randarts. Starting as a juere ranger also helps; a metal machinegun together with Firearms and Marksmanship can go a long way.

Also, using a race that has pickpocket as a skill is incredibly handy. Some places, such as a workshop, have very few "real" NPC's and you can practically rob them blind without worry.
And if you can afford a few Rods of Wall Creation and Teleportation, there are several areas across the map which just become free loot access.

Nothing there is Elona+ specific, of course, but it's a start. For Elona+ stuff I actually find myself on 4chan, and I never thought I would (okay, it's one of the mirror sites). There's been a stream of Elona threads in /vg/ that are going at a breakneck pace, and most are playing +.
