How do you even reliably get shit anyway, without a ranch? Do people just... drop it?

Once in a while you find one as random loot... so yeah, the most reliable way to get some shit on your hands is to keep some creatures in your ranch, and don't slaughter them for meat and genes.

In other news, I observed the random results had been tweaked quite a bit in Elona+. I've found a lot of potions of cure corruption, potential, water and even an evolution as random loot.

Hngh.  How do you guys deal with encumbrance?  I seem to be always pushing my Overweight limit.  I mean, I carry around a lot of scrolls and wands and stuff, but still.  My speed is also usually down to 63 or so, too, which is kinda bad.

Maybe your armor weighs a ton? Or perhaps you don't have weightlifting skill?

A temporary measure (aside from dropping everything) is to get a strong and fast pet to ride.

Geez, as a starting Pianist I'm not doing much better at playing than my warrior, besides dying after one rock instead of three. (Although I suppose starting with a piano is nice.)

Regarding the warrior, you can  do Escort/Courier quests to get far more money than you should have, then buy and equip randarts from travelling merchants.

That's a good idea. Do the town merchants ever have randart weapons, though? And how do I tell the difference between a randart and not?

They're named. Not sure about town merchants, but the ones wandering on the street certainly do.

Thanks for all the tips. Previously I thought 3k gold was a lot for me, but now that I've went and bought equipment and started doing quests quickly, I have 10k in minutes! Maybe I will try some of those 'Beauty and the Beast' quests now, they seem like they wouldn't be too bad.

Careful, the assassins can be really strong on higher levels. I just do the "Before it's too late" ones. Less risk.

Nononono... they ARE bad. Though it's been half-an-hour since you posted, so you probably learned first hand. Imagine being stopped by a rogue ambush while on a "Before it's too late!" quest. That's about how difficult it is, except you can't teleport to victory because leaving the map automatically fails the mission. I've never actually succeeded at one of those, though I only tried it a couple times, so... yeah. :P

The easier ones are kind of doable if you're lucky and they don't kill the escort before you kill them. The harder ones I'd recommend just skipping since there's a good chance you're not only going to fail the quest but die as well. If you do take them try to get as short distance as possible (Palmia -> Yowyn).

'before it's too late' is much safer providing you have enough time and tend to give a bigger reward too.

INcidentally if you've managed to get seven league boots, "Before it's too late" quests are pretty much free money. Before that, don't bother taking any "before it's too late" quests to uhhh.... snow town. I forget the name. It takes forever to walk through snow.
