Oh gods, I can't afford anywhere near the amount. What do I do? I can't make money without being able to get in towns...

Oh, and should  I trade for this 1d56+2 pistol? I heard pistols weren't very good...

If you're over (or is it under?) level 6, you could just let guards kill you: it raises by 5 each death until -20. Do it near your home so you don't have much distance to travel, for a reduced risk that the town will reset and lose the items that you drop (or just leave all your stuff at your house while you do this). This will also affect some of your stats and stat potential, but it's faster than doing tons of quests from Derphy (especially if you're limited by the quests you can accept in Derphy, e.g. no escorts or cooking or high level forest clearing).

You can do escorts with low karma, you just have to go into town, grab the rewards, and get out. Getting killed by guards to raise karma is level 6+, I believe.
And instead of hoping the map doesn't reset and eat your items, just don't bring any items at all. Leave them in your house or something.

Getting a town ruined is a great way to collect cards and figurines for your muesum.

Even better, buy a nuke from that weird girl in Derphy and detonate it in Palmia near the castle. You'll get a huge karma hit if you don't have the wicked trait though. A majority of the city will be ruined and you can steal pretty much everything since most people are dead. It's an easy way to fix an alien invasion too.

You can just plant the nuke at one side of the city, leave, enter on the other side, and wait. The explosion shouldn't reach you.

Whatever you do, don't get Lulwy impregnated, unless you want a ton of eldritch abominations that even she can barely kill roaming around your house, swiping you with acid claws 7+ times per turn and generally impregnating everyone else.

If that happens you'd probably just get Mewmewmew'd all the time, which may be better or worse depending on your point of view.
