just chug a blessed potion every few diseases, should be enough. The same version gives me about 10 times the number of casino chips and 500 (Yen) coins. And don't forget the potions you get for marrying your pets. also: the ether winds are always in the same weeks for me ...
This assumes you have good luck with not only getting cure disease potions. Which is easy in most cases, but there is a potential to not get one or either of them. You're also assuming you'll be able to get a bunch of them, which also has a potential of not happening.

If it did NOT change. Etherwind occurs every FIRST TEN DAYS of every THIRD MONTH (so that's for the first 10 days in the 3rd,6th,9th and 12th month).
I'm pretty sure everyone knows that.

That doesn't help that dude that had a long trip who suddenly gets rain and he just gets in town as the wind is about to blow.

Or the dude who was just SLIGHTLY short of the needed attention of what month it is.

scroll of return.
unless you are doing the "Before it's too late" quests you are free to use them wherever you want to. and if you are doing " before it's too late" quests you should leave 3-4 days puffer before etherwind to stop questing and get somewhere safe.

You're also assuming that the person will have a bunch of those things.

It's been a while, but I remember not having any Return scrolls at all for a decent while.

Also, it's not just Before It's Too Late quests that give Karma loss, it's ANY delivery or escort quests I believe.

Etherwind generally starts within the first 10 days of any month divisible by 3, barring any freak incidents such as Ragnarok.

So just plan ahead.

As I mentioned, everyone already knows that.

As I mentioned, that still doesn't help the guy who gets a freak rainstorm at the wrong time and gets to the town late or the guy who isn't paying attention for just a second.

Well, shit happens, it's a roguelike. It isn't mean to be forgiving or easy. :) I like the added challenge. Plus, as someone else mentioned, it gets balanced out by a few things like higher incidence of casino chips.

It wouldn't be a roguelike if the RNG didn't punish you for breathing. After all, Xom watches over us all... Always.

But there's still challenge with the old ways, no? Less chips, slower Ether, still balanced.

Thing is, there's a limit on how much power you give the RNG before it turns from "Oh goddammit RNG" into "FUCK YOU RNG I'M NOT PLAYING ANYMORE".

Every few steps seems like it's leaning into the latter for me. I'm all fine for the RNG screwing me up, but in my opinion there has to be limits.

Why are you arguing over such a petty matter?
Its not like that version affects you in any way. Even if you did mistakenly download the hard ass version then go ahead and download a different one. You DO have a choice.
On the other hand, if a hard ass version would not exist then the people who want to play it would not be able to play it. They would have NO choice. So existence of this hard ass version is good for everyone.

Why am I supposedly the only one who is arguing?

As for why I'm arguing, I'm arguing because, well, I guess I feel like my opinion is being attacked. A bit lightly, yes, but still being attacked.

Well, if it becomes the standard version that everyone works on, it'll be like 40D Dwarf Fortress Vs. 31.

Admittedly I didn't do any research into whether it will become the standard version or not...

Yeah, that's partly why I stayed with ELM. The new stuff seems to have mostly English translations built-in.

Regarding the whole "challenge" discussion, I hope none of my responses towards you made you feel 'attacked', Tarran, as they weren't meant to. The reason I enjoy these newer versions is not really because they make the game harder or easier than before, but because they just add new content, greatly expand the information in the character sheet, give a (IMO) vital 'sound fx' volume control in the options (amongst other things), fix the blackjack display bug, and just generally add new interesting stuff to experience. Like you said, lesser ether wind/less casino chips balances out to be about the same difficulty either way, but those versions also lack many things I consider to be important fixes and improvements. I suppose what I meant to say originally, is that it exchanges long-term difficulty with short-term difficulty; Etherwind hits you hard and fast, but you can get over it much quicker than before, if you're smart about it.

Eh, this is probably illegible, I wrote it before going to bed... sorry for any confusion. xD

Then you are arguing without a point and in this process wasting your AND the other guy's time. But time is not of value here FOR THIS IS THE INTERNET! A place where people can waste 10 hours watching a loop of a cat whose body is poptart.
In all seriousness though, knock it off. You are creating an atmosphere of hostility for everyone.
Also, I preferred to quote you because YOU were the one that lit the match of the flames of the internet argument.

How is it wasting a person's time if I point out problems with their points?

Is it wasting of time if someone says "Let's all eat candy from now on! Everyone will be happy since it tastes so good!" and someone else says "But candy is bad for you!"?

It's counteractive to make me angry while trying to make me stop being angry.

And I really don't see how anyone could get upset. My posts are best read in an almost apathetic voice.

I stated an opinion, people responded, I pointed out problems while not making any points myself.

I don't really see how I started any flames.

I prefer frogs, personally.

Regardless, I've lost interest in this argument. So you get your wish.
