Is there anyway to get different sprites for the different player races? It odd playing as a fairy or dwarf but looking like a normal person.

I know, some amulets looks like an onion. I will change it, it's probably a problem with Kumiromi's sprite pack which I based mine on :).

I don't think there's a way to do so, so just pick a proper look :).

Okay, so I really want to get into this game, but I am having a hard time. Between the interface and all the places to go and no clue what to do, I feel lost. Is there any sort of beginner's guide or anything (other than the in-game tutorial that does little more than teach the keystrokes) that I could read? Or any general tips on where to go when you start a game?

Not really, but I recommend you do some courier jobs for awhile, make some good gold and gear from that.

There's the "?" help menu, in case you need it.
There's also a fairly active forum.
Then there's a fairly extensive Wiki as well.

As with all .wikia sites, I'd recommend either registering/logging in or using an adblocker.

Feeling lost in a sandbox game is natural, as there IS no real path aside from one you make yourself.

In the meantime, do what Hitty said and grind some quests for $$$ and platinum. Avoid hunting quests, party time quests, or quests that take you to Noyel, and avoid fighting UNLESS you chose a non-magic class MEANT for fighting; locate a non-cursed ranged weapon/ammo and start building that up otherwise.

Collect food in the wilderness (Press enter on a wilderness tile); healthy leaves and edible plants are edible and other junk items such as "junk stone" and "skeletons" occasionally appear in I Want This/Birthday quests.

Hold on to your starting level-up skill points; use platinum to train your skills and use your bonus skill points to train them once it's too expensive to use platinum.

If you didn't take the "prevent cursed whispering" feat at the beginning, remember to remove all of your equipment before falling asleep.

Don't bother identifying equipment that you're going to sell, as it's far too expensive to do so at your level.

Decided to dive back into this, after several months hiatus, even though I still hardly understand the intricacies, or scratch the surface without a dozen hours.

Blew up Palmia for the first time. Wouldn't you know it, got Shena's Panties while I was cleaning up the ruins. Too bad I already wasted 15 coins on buying firearms skill - playing a fairy and didn't want to chance how long it would take to find a ranged weapon/ammo weighing less than 1.

In my sprite pack, is an arena master sprite allright? I now feel like he looks like a brigand from "Ali Baba" tale.

They can be added as a "body" type, but the normal hair, eyes, and clothes won't work with body types that aren't proportioned like the existing ones.  You could always add some of those parts too, but it's a lot more work.  Each player/clothing sprite sheet has twelve sprites, I think, and you would have to make sixteen sheets, just to have one set of clothing and a body for each sex.  That's just for one race, too.
Which reminds me, do people like the current character creation and details? It would be quite a chore to remake it.

If additional hair colors are possible, that would be nice. There's no bright red hair aside from some of the special body shapes, which as stated above are uncustomizable. I think the color changing thing may be an overlay effect of the engine though, so I don't know if its changable. Other then that. There's some extra unfinished spritesheets in the Graphics add-on pack that aren't in, but the demon wings in there are done but just haven't been added ingame

They're nice enough as is I think, and I do have a few of my own creations for the current pc sprites. But if you wanted to redo them too, I most certainly wouldn't complain. I wouldn't blame you for skipping them though, as you said it'd be quite the chore.

I can't seem to find ANY casino chips since I picked this game back up a few days ago. I'm running 1.22 with the 'fan patch' installed (fixes the blackjack display bug, amongst other things).

Is there some unknown bug in this version where casino chips cannot be found in material spots? Seriously; I'm level 9, 29 hours into the game, have 200 driftwood/pebbles/charcoal and a massive assortment of other materials. Yet I have never - not even once - found a chip, besides the ten free ones you get when you first play at a table.

It's starting to get a little frustrating. :/

(Several days later edit) Nobody? I still haven't found a single casino chip. OR Yen coins, for that matter.

Also, what is the little orange 'wings' symbol next to some equipment attributes?

Had the exact same problem playing 1.22+patch a few months ago.  I did not find a single Casino Chip, save for the 10 that you get when playing for the first time.  Not a total game-breaking problem, but it does make Cure Corruption potions harder to acquire.  Can't remember if I had the same problem with Coins though.  I've gone back to the x-mas version
