I will fail the quest, but I won't get killed, even with some higher level NPCs (like shop keepers) around. I just get seriously hurt. Now that I'm level 20+ (Performer 15, Charisma 28), I can even survive a shot from Loyter.

Currently, Loyter is the only NPC that can reliably kill me in the party time quests, and that's enough to almost completely stop my charisma growth if I'm trying to do the quests. Only way to avoid the deaths is to completely search the area, and that doesn't seem to be worth it with the limited time. By the time I can handle it, I'd think I'll have better sources of money.

I'd have 18 performer skill, with 45 charisma and they'll still instakill me with rocks. 18 health is bad.

As far as I know, since the NPC's more picky about music are usually also better at throwing rocks, performer skill doesn't reduce the damage. Only the chance of taking damage.

Unique, Named NPC's generally tend to have very high expectations of your performances. NPC's like this would be Gilbert the Carnel, Shena the Draw, or Loyter. Avoiding these people during performances is good if your performance level is low. IIRC it takes 30+ performer to please Loyter.
Mia the cat freak has incredibly low tastes, though, so it's okay to perform near her.

And, if it's an option, you can simply kill the named NPC's and perform for the beggar-types that are left. Another option, if you have one, is to use Gould's Piano.

NPC music preferences roughly correspond to their levels. Mia just happens to be pretty low level. I THINK, but don't quote me on this, that if your level is well above that of the people you're performing to, they're too afraid to throw rocks, no matter what your performer skill is. It seems to be that way, at least. At my level I can perform for magic vendors relatively safely (they seem to have lower levels for some reason), while other vendors or guards never let me finish a song.

By these rules, you'd be a fool to ever, EVER perform around the gods. Just saying. :P

Edit: Okay, okay, I just tried it in wiz-mode and I certainly got hit by rocks from everyone, even at level 86. I think the part about preferences scaling with level is true, but being high-level yourself doesn't save you.

Makes sense really...you may be a high level, battle hardened, dragon killer, but if you still suck at playing the Lute (low Performer) and ugly as sin (low CHA), you get booed and stoned.

And as we all know, even though stones deal 1d12 damage, the people throwing them have really silly high str scores. Personally, for my mage I give him gardening, as it trains up str, con, and will. Also learning. More HP and an easier time reading is always nice.

If you're playing Elona+, then everyone needs Gardening, for those super herb mixtures that were mentioned before. Of course, I got the 20 Gardening I needed a while ago... the 30 cooking will take so much longer. ;_;

I wish I never learned how easy save-scumming is. It's so hard not to make your first drink from every fountain a stat-increase or wish. But I shall prevail!

Any tips for defeating mass monsters? My friend read some spellbooks in his storage house(against my warning) and now they won't go away.
There's also an invisible monster chucking potions that occasionally transform the mass monsters into other monsters. He was also mutated several times because of it.
Anyway, he kept trying to melee them and cast spells at them, but they kept splitting, then he rage quit after dying for the sixth time.

If they're the same as blue bubbles in splitting mechanics, it's important to go after the high HP ones first. When it splits, the splitter and the splittee share the current HP of the one that casted the split spell. So if you keep going after the high level ones then you'll eventually kill them all, in theory. Of course, if he's a low level he may just be better off leaving the storehouse to them for now. It's a loss. They can still regenerate HP after all, so he may just be outgunned. He could also nuke the storehouse, but I dunno if that'll destroy all his stuff, or if he has to stay alive for the nuke to go off.

Alternately, start investing heavily into equipment shops and find some awseome equipment to help even the odds. I'd imagine you can eventually grind up enough equipment DV or PV to be unkillable to them.

Tell him to get a grenade. Grenades are pretty awesome for their 3x3 radius of 'lots-o-damage', so your friend should be able to deal damage over a greater area. Also, throw water at invisible things, they gulp it (Or something like that) and then they become visible.
