Too many hives
« on: April 22, 2011, 03:49:58 pm »

Hi everyone,

I biult quiete some hives and eventually this message would show up:

"Too many hives
  *No output"

I didn't yet notice any consequences though.
Does anyone know the reasoning behind this?

Beekeeping is buggy. I've never seen that, but I've learned that I can only have one dorf with the beekeeping labor enabled or else they all go crazy.

How many hives have you built?

I built 81.

And i  just noticed that this leads to more than 1000000 live small animals in the stock menu.

Bees are [VERMIN_MICRO]

Meaning they're calculated differently.

One "bee" as a tile represents hundreds or thousands of actual bees.

mhm it were only 81 one stacks but with each one beeing a size of roughly 15k, they made a total of more than 1e6 bees

According to this topic this message starts appearing at 41 hives. This is presumably to model how much land you'd need to sustain a hive, but as to whether it's actually effected by embark size or vegetation levels, or how much it limits production, nobody's done the !!SCIENCE!! yet.

Do you have 81 occupied hives, or some unoccupied? If you have empty ones pull them down and then start on the occupied ones. I counted 59 as the upper limit for any hive production.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

it seems that at at 57 occupied hives the message turn from "restricted" to "no" output
