I found obsidian at the Z of 143...is there a chance of having a magma pipe nearby?

Are there still Magma Pipes around? I know Volcanoes exist.

Where there's obsidian, magma is near. You may be close to the magma sea.

I actually noticed a lot of obsidian around, and about the pipes, i think they still exist, but i still won't found nothing

Obsidian's presence isn't necessarily related to the presence of near-surface magma. It's an igneous extrusive layer stone, just like, say, basalt; if you find basalt on the surface, do you expect to find a magma pipe nearby? While it's more likely than if the surface is mudstone or some other sedimentary rock since there's higher volcanism in igneous zones, it isn't indicative of much.

Magma pipes, or rather magma pools as they're called now, are essentially volcanoes that terminate in one of the cavern layers. They do exist, but aren't visible on the embark map.

You can have obsidian layers as part of an embark, not necessarily a volcano. And subterreanean volcano-like things still exists. I guess these are the magma pipes people talk about. I think I had one in a recent version, maybe 31.21 or something.

Is the obsidian warm?

The obsidian around a magma pool is a few tiles in depth and digging into it normally terminates in a warm stone warning. It's possible to graze a magma pool in such a way that you get nothing but a long obsidian tunnel, but if you hit obsidian without hitting warm stone soon after you've probably got a layer of the stuff.

I've wondered the same thing, because my last embark was next to an ocean and the beach was made of obsidian. I took it as a bad omen (the bad kind) and left. This was informative

It's only a one-tile shell around the pool.
