After a sudden relization, what I want to find out the most in the next update is not my characters, but Gendo's reaction after a job interview with a mute woman that is constantly rejected by other companies, a former and reformed underground jerkass Assassin, and then a ("possibly" *Wink*) former communist russian terrorist.

Most likely a comment about how low X-COM's recruiting standards are currently.

Name: Disco Bandit
Gender: Whatever you want, baby.
Preferred Equipment: Thermal Flares, Lasers, Smoke Grenades, and Stun Batons
Bio: The Disco Bandit boogies to and fro, hither and yon. Whence comes he? No man knows. Whither strikes he next? Here, at XCOM!
He can commonly be seen groovin' out his newest dance move: "Crouch before you shoot".

And behind him in the queue is:

Name: Blanka
Gender: Male
Preferred Equipment: Something that fires an electrical ball, perhaps a stun launcher. Or whatever durable gun we have lying around.
Bio: A Soldier transformed into the ultimate fighter, his body  has been warped and his mind shattered. His personality erratically and unpredictably changes from a violent beast and an avatar of peace. Confused, he escaped aboard a fruit freight and found himself in the xcom base.
[This is all taken from the old Street Fighter movie, if he has an updated bio and personality, then please use that. By default I'm turning down all revives just to make things more dramatic in the event of a death. ]

And we probably need more Scientists if we are to win this game

Name: Deckard Cain
Gender: Male
Scientist
Bio: It's a mystery :o
Nobody wants to stay a while and listen to his story, but he seems to be able to identify every single item in existence, no doubt useful for science!

I might have gone overboard with the characters.

Here's a tip with constructing new bases:
Enemies enter from the elevator and hangars, so what you probably want to do is to make sure that these two are connected. Let's call this the entrance block for simplicity. Now, make sure that the entrance block is adjacent to at most two structures, so you can have choke points when defending the base. Sure that leaves some squares unused, but it is almost always worth it.

Allow me to say that Peru is a particularly horrible place when you are there to work. I have horrible burns from days of manual labor, I've injured a dozen ways in relation to pulled muscles, and yet it's still not half as bad as the one day I've spent in New Jerseh

Deserve's a pretty weighted word to use there.

That said, I would really like an update...

I'm busier than I thought I'd be. Most of the work is just writing the update. I've already played through it.

That's why I dropped math for my final year. Too much effort for stuff that just decided to annoy me.

CHAPTER 13: Unlucky 13

Director Ikari, reporting another catastrophe. The survivors have just returned from Moscow and are in the sick bay being treated for their injuries. The funeral will be held in an hour, but first I needed to write down this entry and explain what happened.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only a day or two ago, all was good. Riding on our high from our increased funding, we'd found that March was distinctly lacking in alien threats. That changed on the 8th.

: It's just as we feared sir, another large UFO heading for Russia. Our Interceptors won't reach it in time.

: We don't know that for sure. Launch Red 5 and try and catch up to it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Damn it! Ready the Skyranger in case of--

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: In case of a terror strike.

: Sir, the last terror mission ended in complete failure for our troops. Are you sure you want to risk another one?

: There's a good chance we lose Moscow's support if we let those aliens attack unopposed. I will NOT lose that funding, Wibble. Launch the Skyranger now.

In defense of my own funding, my own hubris, I let my men march to their doom.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Simon, moving out in the Lagann-tank! *whirrr* Huh??

*PCHOO*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: SIMON!!

: *cough-HACK* B-bro..?

: It's ok, Simon, I'm here!

: Out of my way *smack* idiot! Willpower won't get you through a scorched torso. Time to see if these medkits really work. *beep beep boop sniktbub sklurt*

: G...GAH! *groan*

: He's out cold, but he'll live. Everyone else get off the ship. Kill whatever did that.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Some kinda silhouette, I can't make it out! Rocket did nothing!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: I missed too.

*Flish, BZZT*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Oh bother, you're really all that poor shots! Look, it's just a Sectoid with a hole in its chest!

: Yeah, but... what the hell is that disc? Uriel go check it out!

: Can't.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Killing that first.

*PCHOO, BZZT*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Actually, killing THAT first, ma'am.

*BZZT BZZT*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: HOW-DARE-YOU-BURN-MY-BELOVED-LITTLE-BROTHER-SHOT!!!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: YE-HE-HE-HES!!! Feel the burn of my FIRE LASER!

: Great job, you two. Now Uriel, go check out that disc.

: Roger, ma'am. Moving out. Looks like... some kind of weapons platform? *PCHOW*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: URIEL!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Oh, holy shit! What are those things?!

: Eek! Get to cover, fast!

: Too late! I'll shield you, madam!

*PCHOW PCHOW*

: Oh, bother... *thud*

: Ste-- *PCHOW PCHOW PCHOW PCHOW PCHOW*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: They got the captain! Time to try out the big rockets.

*KRACKA-KA-THOOOOOM*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: ...Groovy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Comrades, I have found a Sectoid! I shall smite him in the name of the X-COM-land!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: Oh dear. *PCHOOOO*

: ASSESSMENT: YOU ARE ALL WORTHLESS SLABS OF MEAT TO BE HUMPED BY FARM ANIMALS. I SHALL CONTINUE THE MISSION ON MY OWN.

*PCHOO*

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

: USERDAMMIT

: That is IT. X-COM, retreat!

After that, it was a mad dash back to the ship. I was amazed no one else was lost.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only one body was recovered in the retreat. Stitch's. I can understand Tarvish's reasoning. She was the only other one of the first few waves still alive, besides Shinji. I pulled them all back immediately; no status page will be shown of the debriefing. Suffice it to say we failed. I have decided that there will no longer be any excursions to terrorized cities until the world's governments are willing to commit their own troops to the battle.

Now then, I believe it is time for the Captain's funeral. The newly-appointed Captain Tarvish will be leading the proceedings. Afterwards I have recruits to interview. Director Ikari, logging out.

----------

...

: *zzwrpt* REBOOTING. CHECKING SURROUNDINGS FOR COMRADES: IT APPEARS THEY HAVE LEFT ME HERE. FUCK.

*EEEEEK*

: BARELY REPRESSED GLEE: IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE MORE ALIENS TO SLAUGHTER YET. I SHALL RETURN TO BASE AFTER DISPOSING OF THEM. HOORAY.

"Apparently spiral energy isn't... quite as all-powerful here. Gone from being able to bring people back from the dead to being put down by a few burns..."
Simon laughs once, and then grips his stomach and stops.
"Not a good idea to do that, apparently.
