That's an interesting tidbit, never noticed that until now. Now I have a better idea of how they might look.
In DnD lore, late editions, only. In earlier editions they were puppy-men.
In folkloire a kobold could be a shapeshifter, so it could be anything. Basically an evil cave spirit.
In DF they are furry brown-furred goblinoids laying eggs.

It's worth noting that the kobolds in DF have no fur or even hair of any sort in their descriptor, whereas everything else (like trolls for instance) has a very clear one. Skin is their prominent feature, so I don't believe you are correct on this one, even if it may have been true for Kobold Quest.
My bad, I haven't checked kobolds' raws for a while. Yeah, they have a brown skin, that's not a fur.
My perception of kobolds is colored by Suikoden, where they're dog-like people of a size between humans and halflings. This is Kuromimi, as an example.
Oh hell naw.
Small, spear wielding, tunnel digging, trap-laying, mischievous, yelping lizard people is my perception of them.
DF has quite a different shift from other settings, so DnD or Tolkien stereotypes do not work here. Nobody objects that DF elves are far from Tolkien elves, I wonder why do so many people have a hard time understanding the actual look of kobolds in DF.
P.S. Here's another picture of a DF StAII kobold for you:
