If you want pain then cause limb dislocations or fractures, either one hurts like hell.

"XXX WANTS TO STAB ME!" in the worst case scenario, your death WILL be avenged.
What if you, say, want to live a peaceful and happy life rather than having a violent death followed by vengeance you won't see?

Running is always a good option.

This thread has gotten a little violent though, it seems. I have never had a bully threaten my life with a weapon that he actually intended to use. It does happen but it's really quite rare. And I have never had to break or dislocate bones to prove the point that I was not going to stand by and take the abuse. Many bullies aren't used to their victims taking any stand whatsoever. At the very least, unless you provoke them to further action, many will go find easier targets.

Stomp the bully into the ground, rip off their head, drag it into the school and scream "WHO'S NEXT?!"
Then live peacefully, for no one will touch you.

Be quickly arrested, because you have clearly stepped beyond the bounds of self-defense and entered the realm of threatening your entire school. Serve whatever the maximum sentence is for a minor.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Makes for fun/interesting/cathartic fiction, but not anything I admire or find truly productive in real life.

Also keep in mind that many bullies come from really shitty backgrounds and their behavior is a projection of their own problems.  Most deserve to be pitied, not obliterated, not that that makes life as a bullying victim any easier to deal with.

And all the bullshit about the strong and the weak is... several words come to mind... juvenile?  disturbing?  troglodyte?  hypocritical?

My childhood was rough, but I am at least proud of the way I got through it.

And you'll be left in a padded cell for the rest of your life, peacefully mumbling to yourself about how you won against the bullies.  It's perfect!

I always wonder exactly how this story started, but it's got 90's written all over it.  Sure, such hardluck cases exist.  I remember one guy in middleschool who liked to brag about shit his brothers (plural) taught him about being in jail and shit.

There's also a pretty strong strain of whitebread bullies who've had everything handed to them in their lives and never heard the words "no" or "stop that", so whether consciously or not think they're entitled to push people around.  Or the strain I got to deal with in my school district, which saw an unstable mix of genuinely impoverished black and hispanic students, and painfully wealthy white kids trying desperately to be "gangstas", turning into vastly bigger dicks than it would have ever occurred to their real-world counterparts to be.

Self-esteem is such a skeleton-key of child psychology it's a joke.  As George Carlin once put it, it turns out that successful motivated violent people think very highly of themselves.

Well I was in a very small town where everyone had a pretty good idea what was going on in each other's home environments, unless they were among the outcasts.

Of the most aggressive bullies I dealt with, all except one were obviously abused or neglected at home.  There was one I knew little about, but he seemed to be fairly priveleged and probably fit more in the 'whitebread' strain.  Most of the moderate bullies who were general pricks without being overtly aggressive came from brutish redneck backgrounds where they weren't drastically mistreated but definitely not taught anything decent either.

So that's just my personal experience from 12-20 years ago.  I'm sure there are different factors in different times and places.  I actually didn't take any cue from popular psychological jargon of the time to figure out that the bullies where I came from had serious person problems.  I came to that conclusion completely on my own.

If you mean hero in the same sense as heroes of old (e.g. Ulysses, Samson), then I suppose he sorta-kinda is.  Old school heroes had a tendency to roam foreign lands tearing shit up and crushing their enemies.  The Conan path to greatness, more or less.
