I was a star athlete in high school.  It didn't prevent bullying.  I rarely got bullied during practices and games, teammates generally left me alone, and it probably prevented any serious physical threats that I would have received otherwise.  I never got jumped by a group of people dead set on beating the shit out of me.  That's all I got out of it.

That's probably because I seem to have been born a pacifist, though.  I care less about elevating myself in the eyes of others than I do about preserving my own self-image, and becoming that which I hated would have been counter-productive.  There are many times I could have defended myself better if I was willing to go on the offensive, but even as an 8 year old I thought about things this way.

If you move or change schools (an option many people don't have), you're giving the bully victory, handing it right to him.
You're gonna have to explain this or I'm gonna use this line of reasoning to justify everything.

And I give DC a lot of crap for being a terrible place, but apparently everything is much worse everywhere else. Even the racial violence wasn't as bad as half of this.

When you move away it makes the bully feel like he just won and may motivate him to continue bullying.

Possibly.

Although they are a bully, and getting shits and giggles motivates them to continue bullying. Fighting them also motivates them to hate your guys and continue bullying. Pretty much every option makes them bully more unless you are lucky enough to be able to face them and not face the backlash from the system. Seeing all the horror stories of various different systems across the country the idea that you can take on a bully and somehow have it work out is laughable.

The chance of a bully losing their punching bag and having no motivation is higher than the school system/community doing the right thing. Not to mention at least one person will be spared, you.

I was into karate and I could beat any of them. Actually, I fought five or four of them at the same time and won. But apart from a temporary relief that didn't help much. It's just that... I don't know. Some person tend to have the urge to bother the less socially fits, and damn you if you're on their way. If they gain support from the class, things become awful.  If you're two or more, it's ok, you just fight. Else get out of there.

It you aren't willing to lie, then you will have a very horrible life. Not childhood, not adolescence, life. Lies are what make the world go round.

I probably sound like I'm being harsh, because I am. It's the only way to advocate temporary amorality ^^ Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. - Machiavelli
I cannot stop myself from replying to this.

As it turns out, you can't really be sure of that. Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth, sure, but there's a difference between lying and not telling someone something. Withholding information to prevent a row is not the same as withholding information to damage someone or benefit yourself. That is, it isn't a lie.

As a matter of fact, I've had a pretty good life of trying my damndest to be honest and I expect it will continue that way.

Quote from "The prince" if I'm right?
Yep. Machiavelli gets a lot of stick but the book is a genuinely good read.
You do realize that book was tongue-in-cheek, right?

What kind of sport are we talking about here? Because long distance running isn't exactly going to help you in a fight.

Football for 6 years
Sprinter in track for 2 years
Wrestler for 4 years

Did well in all of them.  I was the only iron-man player on the team my last year in football and was almost undefeated (as junior varsity, but still) my last year in wrestling.

I'm not a big guy.  I'm kind of deceptively strong.  I could bench 220 when I weighed 160, which isn't exactly incredible, but it's a lot stronger than most people.  I could have lifted the majority of bullies off the ground fairly easily, and no I wasn't bullied by stick figures.  I mean anyone less than 260 lbs or so... I could squat 330.  And yes, I know this from experience.  My coaches liked to pit me against the heavyweights to show them how much someone who knew what they were doing could use their dependency on their size against them.

Well, a guy on another forum who was a cop, he was told by his boss the following"

"If you fuck them up enough, they aren't going to tell anyone."

And that's pretty much my idea on how to stop bullies. Beat them hard enough that they don't want to mess with you.

I'm going to have to say that the reason you were bullied was because you were strong but wouldn't fight. Makes other people look even stronger.

I know a bunch of cops personally, and their advice pretty much was "Get away first. Punch later"

Ironically my Grandad is a cop and his advice to people being bullied is "hit them with a big stick. If that doesn't work, find a bigger stick.  Just make sure you don't leave finger prints, a confession or witnesses."

Of course it's a bit more complicated than that. You need gloves to make sure you don't leave finger prints, can't confess or confide in anybody, and have to be somewhere without witnesses and with access to big sticks...an alibi is useful too...

That is probably the best advice I have ever heard.

Seeing as how you're not a cop and the guy who's boss I quoted was, that makes sense.

The best advice I'd give would be "Kill anything and everything until there's nothing left that can harm you". But life would become pretty boring afterwards :/

stuff

While violence can solve problems (depending, of course, on how you frame the problem e.g. "I'm being bullied" versus "Foo feels the need to bully others") and can be pretty cost-effective, it is certainly not the only solution (nor is it a "moral" one, but that's not in dispute).  That said, I have a hard time buying your claim that all bullying boils down to "kick ass or the terrorists bullies win!"

On a possibly-related note, you seem to have a fascination with weightlifting, though I'm not sure what to make of it.  You were certainly fixated on it in the army thread.

That only works if you get lucky, I did just that, but I know I got off lucky. I could have very easily have had my life screwed up for saving my sisters life if any one of a number of factors had gone differently. It worked because I was defending someone else, because my mother was there to defend me and intelligent/perceptive/ballsy enough to do it, because the parents of the kids I beat down were already in trouble with CPS, that they were just smart enough to back down, that I and my sister were 2 of only a dozen gifted students in my entire school and the principal didn't really want to screw us over.
